I thought the US was supposed to be done with this shit. Let alone to friendly neighbouring countries! And here I was very vaguely considering taking it off my personal no-fly list.

Via [livejournal.com profile] commodorified:

Author Peter Watts attempts to cross border US/Canada border without incident, gets punched, kicked, thrown in jail cell overnight and has possessions confiscated.

Went to the physio today. My knee will be fine - the ligaments that connect the kneecap to the femur are inflamed and once that goes down, the numbness should go away. I'm quite relived. The ankle is sprained. Not badly, which is good.

I have exercises to do, am off frisbee until informed otherwise and am supposed to keep icing it on a regular basis to help with the swelling and the healing.

It could be much worse.

Have spent the evening reading on the internets and watching episode three of White Collar. I <3 that show. It's implausible, certainly. But it's also clever, witty and fun. And it hasn't made me cringe yet.

I should get into a habit of going to bed earlier; it's not like I don't want to go to bed as my bed is warm and comfortable and I don't like getting up from it in the morning. I'm tired and lying down sounds like a really good idea. But! I get to sleep for as long as I want in the morning and that sounds like a really good thing.

Stayed up far too late last night finishing Utena - I had to know what happened next - and as a result was drinking coffee until lunchtime.

There's a new coffee machine in the staffroom at work. It has different buttons and layout to the old one, so I ended up with most of an expresso in my cup of plain coffee. Don't ask me how, I'm still confused over that one. I was jittery until I had to leave for class, would have been more fidgity if I hadn't had my crossstitch with me and am only just crashing; I now have the same sort of headache I had when I woke up with a vice pressing slowly into my temples.

There's a reason I don't drink expresso.

The last time I drank expresso, it was my first year down here and [livejournal.com profile] jessikast and I were visiting a friend - I hadn't realised quite how strong expresso was then. I remember spending the next eight hours or so finishing the high, crashing and then coming back up to balance again. I think [livejournal.com profile] thurisaz83 got the brunt of that one via the internet.

Now I think I need to go to bed.

It's a good thing that I've already conclusively established the fact that I'm crazy because I have no other explanation for why I'm continuing to stay up to finish this corset purely because I want to wear it tomorrow.

One half is finished, the other is pinned and needs sewing. Which takes two to three hours. But better I do it now than get up early to do so. I shall sew until I'm too tired to stay awake any longer (which isn't too far off, so hopefully I'll get a fair amount done) and then fall into bed.

UPDATE: Now have only one side of one tab and the end to do, which requires more concentration than I possess just now and have watched the first two episodes of Torchwood which were entertaining. My fingers are sore, the words on the monitor are blurry (although that could be because I'm not wearing my glasses now) and it's five to three, and I get up in three hours. Which means it's really time to move the cat and fall into bed.

The flight down was on one of the Airbus planes, which is the biggest plane I've flown in within New Zealand. Six seats a row, lots of rows, not enough space to crossstich in (I checked that I was allowed the scissors before I went through the x-ray scanner) and small children. One of the said small children said something rude as we were leaving the plane, and later, as I was waiting for my bag said small child and mother came up to me and apologised. That was surprising, but appreciated.

I was met by [livejournal.com profile] thesane and her partner who took me back to their place and fed me dinner, which was good lasagne. We then watched Barbarella: Queen of the Universe, which I fell asleep partway through. I'm sorry about that because I was quite enjoying it. I might have to watch it again at some point and stay awake for the entire thing. Jane Fonda's character seemed to loose her clothes at any excuse.

They have a lovely house with three fireplaces that they can't use, this being Christchurch and a library/music room with lots of books, a piano and a harp (clearly the important things about the house) and a lovely garden with increasingly less ivy.

Today was spent wandering around town. We visited lots of fabric stores, some bookstore (saw a copy of Redeeming the Lost by Elizabeth Kerner, which I would have bought if I hadn't read it before. Instead (at a different bookstore) I picked up The Excalibur Alternative by David Weber, which I enjoy somewhat more.

I am now in possession of five metres of blue wool which which I am to make a Daughter's Day festival dress with. I understand much of the next two days will be spent making the corset and possibly starting the dress. I am sure it will be fun, and [livejournal.com profile] thesane is planning to get me to enjoy plain-sewing. But then I get to do stupid amounts of embroidery, which I'm quite looking forward to. It will, at least, be transportable.

I keep wanting to make a hardanger or some other form of cutwork or a pulled thread altar cloth.

Playing in Parallax makes me remember just how much I miss gaming on a regular basis. I miss thinking about my character and planning potential reactions to possible situations. I miss the way they invade my waking thoughts and insist I work out what they're going to do next NOW. I've been thinking about Isthian a bit lately, but Isthian has become a story character in her own right, which I've never had happen to an rpg character before. Maree tried, but Minna and Tak never even considered it.

But really, I'm too busy. I don't want to be out every weeknight and at the moment, I'm always out two nights a week, three times fortnightly and I have this reluctance to give up my weekend afternoons, which I might end up doing if I find a game I want to play in enough. I remember how busy I was when I was in two games a week and writing Hindenburg, and at the moment, it appears that I've chosen Ultimate over gaming. It's not a choice I ever thought I would make, sport over make-believe.

Have caught up with The Dresden Files and am still very much enjoying them. I like them better than I liked the book, indeed, I almost felt that Storm Front, which is based off the first book, was weaker than other episodes.

Last week I purchased Fullmetal Alchemist: The Road to Shambala (special edition), otherwise known as FMA the movie. I had picked up some spoilers but not enough to tell me what it was really about. It was very pretty, kinda bittersweet and not at all subtle in its messages. While I wanted a happy ending, I was satisfied and happy with the one I got. I wanted a happy ending because I like happy endings, but that wouldn't have meant the movie had as much impact on me.

After church today I went into the Shoe Clinic and looked at their court shoes. The young man looking after me was very helpful and I felt somewhat overwhelmed with information about different types of court shoes (netball, soccer, crosstrainers, based-off-running shoes) and found a nice pair of crosstrainers that were rather comfortable. However, they were $200, and I just don't spend that much on shoes, especially shoes I can only wear indoors, so I'll go to the Warehouse after work tomorrow. If they don't have anything, I'll check out Stirling Sports.

Used the bbq for the first time tonight and cooked saussages and onions and bacon on it, to go with baked potato and corn on the cob. It went well and I only called Dad once to check that I had the gas fitting on the right way around (I did).

Just choked on my fruit tea and got it all over my keyboard. I once spilled half a cup of Irish Breakfast in my keyboard at work and it was fine. I'm still using it. Hopefully this one will react just as well.

Why do I do this to myself? I have to get up in five hours. Sometimes my stupidity astounds me.
