nishatalitha: slightly crumpled white sheets, small text= "sleep now" (Sleep now)
I haven't had a headache since I got the new lenses. Nor have my eyes felt dry, tired and scratchy. I hadn't realised I had become used to the latter. This is all kinds of awesome. I can put up with feeling dizzy from turning my head too fast and not being able to skim book titles in passing at the library and having to actually look at the books properly for this. And the being able to see things properly (when I look at them through the correct part of the lenses) is kinda awesome as well.

There was a neat essay on Wellington in last weeks Indulgence pull out of the Dom Post, which included the awesome line, "Friends, aquaintances, family, colleagues, strangers - the people provide the beat through Wellington's concrete veins." Something about that imagery really appeals to me. It sounds like the sort of thing that should be on the literature slabs around the waterfront.

Am currently reading in bed. I like this having a laptop business (I'm totally allowed to use it in bed if it's a weekend, right?). The music is playing on my desktop speakers, which are better than the laptop's and I can see the pretty swirly screensaver. I should install pretty swirly screensavers on Pania. Actually, that was easy - I have Vista, so done. Bubbles it is. All I could really want is a remote for itunes on Annabelle, so I can change songs without getting out of bed...

And so far, I have managed to convince my cat not to walk over it.

I've been quoting bits of Curse of Chalion to myself this week, so I decided it was time for a reread. I think it's only the second or third time this year. I don't read it nearly as much as I did the first couple of years, which I think was once a month or more.

Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon arrived in the latest lot of new books. It's quite adorable. Very much primary school level, but still lots of fun. And the pictures are very cute.

My eyes are finally settling down again, which means the headaches are not as constant. They're still achy by the end of day, but I'm kinda used to that now and it just makes me very tired. New lenses are maybe a week away - I had my eye test Monday week ago, and she said it would take two weeks to make them.

The good news: the short-sightedness in one eye is .25 better. The astigmatism and the short-sightedness in the other eye hasn't changed.

The bad news: The astigmatism in one eye is .5 worse. The long-sightedness in both eyes is worse. My focus points for near distance (reading) and mid-distance (computer monitor) are different. New lenses are $500.00 and there will be 6 prescriptions in the pair. I won't be able to get away with two pairs of glasses anymore, so they will be progressive lenses.

Does anyone have a good guacamole recipe? Avocadoes were cheap at the supermarket last night and the guacamole I made wasn't particularly brilliant, but it's something I could try making again with a better recipe.

For all that I managed to rouse myself around noon today, I have been amazingly productive in the kitchen this afternoon. I have made:

  1. Chai tea with a russian caravan base;
  2. Sesame seed coffee cake;
  3. Asian flavoured meatballs for dinner;
  4. Salad and noodles for the rest of dinner; and
  5. Kaffir lime pie (including sweet shortcrust pastry from scratch).

Felt like cooking and figured I may as well get my entire list done while I was in there. It also meant that I ended up dragging the tape deck in there and listening to my favourite mix tape from high school. I'm now trying to recreate this as a playlist on itunes, but lack essential songs such as:

  • J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers - Last Kiss;
  • Russell Morris - Rachel's Coming Home;
  • Herman's Hermits - Silhouettes on the Shade; and
  • Gerry & The Pacemakers - Girl on a Swing.

I'm probably missing others, but those are the ones missing from the side I've listened to again in my room in order to put this together. I also listened my way through Amy Grant's The Collection, which I need to get hold of on CD so I can then listen to it on itunes. I forsee a trip to the library sometime soon.

The not being at my computer for most of the day has defintely helped with the headache. That being said, I'm quite glad I have an eye test tomorrow. I'm getting tired of my eyes hurting all the time.

I hate getting into a new big fandom. It takes so long to read everything that's good - even when just working from recs lists and delicious. And it means that my delicious page is hardly representative of my reading for the past year, let alone for as long as I've been reading fic.

I've been accused of being obsessive about books before. I suppose I can see how things can be construed that way and sometimes I even care. However, when it comes to purchasing the correct, hard-to-find edition of a fairly common book over trademe and that book is in the best condition of the three of them and it completes two sets (trilogy and universe by author) then I really don't care.

Hmmm. This is why I wear glasses because then I don't see one and a half of each letter that I type. It's also a clue that I should be in bed now.

Watched 1.06 of Eureka with C. and [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose and we spent almost half the show laughing too hard to hear what was being said. It was fantastic. I love that show. While I'm not keen on math and physics and IT myself, I like reading/watching about people who are.

Had a weird Wellington moment at work today. I was working as normal and one of the IT people had a consultant in who looked vaguely familar. He came over, we chatted and I eventually worked out that it was [livejournal.com profile] bl9_knt's dad. Kinda surreal.

I made a small double batch of pesto this afternoon. We'll be doing well if it lasts a week. Still, we have some pine nuts and lots of italian parsley but no oil so we can make some more soonish.

I went shopping with [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose yesterday and between us we got a number of things that we actually needed and some things that we didn't need but wanted regardless. I got some high heels as a thing I didn't actually need (they're really pretty though) and [livejournal.com profile] jessikast's birthday present as something that I did.

Have officially signed up with the Northland Medical Centre to have them as my GP. Visited them, had my ankle checked out. Haven't broken it, which is good, but I crushed the nerve and I was told that if it wasn't feeling better in the morning, I was to go to physio. Perhaps as a result of the walking I was doing yesterday, I ended up going to physio this afternoon.

I went to the optomistrist yesterday afternoon (this does appear my week for medical things) and had my eyes checked. Since I got my glasses just over a year ago, my prescription has doubled. My right eye is now at 1 and my left at 0.5. Not much compared to people with really high prescriptions, but quite high enough for discomfort without glasses. No wonder I've been having trouble reading things and seeing properly!

C. and I met up yesterday evening and went over to alessan's, a guy we met at con with more books than I have and a much more pure collection. Most interesting. Between us, we went away with about a dozen. It is so nice to have things to read that I haven't read before. Alessan actually knows [livejournal.com profile] darthsappho and [livejournal.com profile] laputain and met them a number of years ago - back when [livejournal.com profile] laputain was an undergraduate student! Based on this, he thought C. and I were older than we actually are, but we set the record straight. But books!

My ankle is becomming fairly luridly coloured. The physio used ultrasound and it had actually changed colour a little by the end of the session. That was kinda cool. She was pleased that I'm wearing my old hospital pressure stockings. I have to try and remember to rotate it and move it up and down every half hour. When I'm reading, I'm not very good at noting the passage of time. Which reminds me, I have a chapter to read before cell group tonight. I will endeavour to do that instead of picking up my dragon again...

I should write more here, but I'm tired and can't be bothered. I saw the doctor on Monday, and I'm to try and get to bed earlier, as it may alleviate my constant tiredness. In other words, be in bed before midnight. I'm trying for 11pm.

I really think I might have to get glasses. My eyes were being funny in Greek. They focused in and out and were blurry and sore and stuff. I almost got dizzy and did get a headache. It was not fun. I've been doing crossstitch this evening, too, so my eyes are still sore. The crossstitch is very pretty, though.

*wails* Turning off my desk lamp so the light doesn't hurt my eyes means that reading my handwritten essay is a lot harder, and thus strains my eyes. So now I'm getting another headache, I can't take more painkillers 'cause I took some about an hour or two ago, and I have a page and a half more to copy out, and I'm not sure how much more to write yet.

THIS IS NOT FUN.
