The food show was at the Westpac Stadium this weekend and I decided that the best time to go was after church today. [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow was in Tawa for lunch and [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose had to write an assignment, so I went by myself. It was quite a different experience compared to going with someone and I missed being able to share the experience. I think it meant I moved faster—I tended to get impatient with the crowds at some of the stalls more easily and I was done in about two and a half hours.

The only thing I wish I'd gone back for was the smoked garlic carmelised balsamic vinegar. I did taste an even better caramelised balsamic vinegar, but it was about twice the price, even at food show prices.

I resisted pretty much everything we already had in the house. The only thing I didn't resist was some of the Cow Collective yoghurt, because they were doing 3 for $10 and it tastes amazing. I got the black plum (probably my favourite flavour), the mango, and plain.

In no particular order, I also bought sheep's milk parmesan; basil pesto, sun dried tomato pesto, tomato and olive pesto (3 for $10 again); 3 flavours of harvarti in one block; a very sharp cheddar for [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose; 2 packets of feta-stuffed pepperdews and one of olives in balsamic vinegar (another 3 for $10); and a bottle of scrumpy. I also took away a card for the Doctors rieslings (since they'd sold out), and a free Sunday Star Times.

And if I see Piako lemon curd frozen yoghurt in the supermarket, I want to buy some. They didn't have any containers for sale, but were doing mini-ice creams for $1. I had a cone and it was really good. I was quite disappointed that they didn't have any containers for sale. [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow will be interested to note that they also do feijoa.

[livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose made us a beef roast for dinner—I'd forgotten how good roasts are. It's been ages since we last had one. They suit the cooler weather, and after the cold snap at Easter, it just hasn't been cold enough. I don't even have flannel sheets on my bed, and I usually put them on the last couple of weeks in May! I have lit the fire tonight and the lounge is snuggly warm.

Am making progress on the meta-data. Some of them are rather annoying to find the meta data for, and I solved this by deleting the annoying ones (Buffy & Angel novelisations which I will never read) and all the Anne Rice. For some reason, a search for Anne Rice also brought up Crown of Stars by Robert Jordan...
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (with laptop)
After the downpour last weekend, I noticed my curtains were disgusting and mildewy and what I had thought was dirt on my ceiling was actually mould. This weekend I have washed my curtains (still somewhat gross, but so much better) and wiped down the ceiling. I feel much better about my room now. I have also won a dehumidifier on trademe, and will get that picked up sometime this week. It's the same as the one we already have, so I know it will be decent.

Still working my way through Calibre. I now have all my ebooks loaded into it (I think) and am going through it, checking metadata. I am being quite restrained for me and am not insisting that the cover loaded into Cailbre match the cover on my copy, if I own it in hardcopy. Yeah. I have a lot of ebooks - this is going to take a while. Especially since I keep forgetting to make sure that I don't load .rar or .zip files.

Have not yet managed to choose a blackwork pattern to bookmark at work, but have stitched a couple of tiny patterns on [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose's and [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's aprons - a drunk green ant on [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose's and a slightly more sober blue beetle on [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's. I used waste canvas for the lines, since I cannot stitch straight on plain fabric without it. I will probably put a ladybird on mine. Pictures below the cut.

Blackwork insects in colour )

Didn't cook anything remotely exciting this weekend - I made chicken stock and a Tuscan vegetable soup (with some of the stock), and that's about it. Used about half the stock in the soup and have frozen the other half in two-cup lots. I do like having home made stock to use. It's one of the really good throw in your old vegetables and simmer for two hours soups, and it tasted really good and hearty with lots of flavour. Chuck in a bit of bread at the end for thickening and away you go. I will probably have it for lunch for the next couple of days. No pictures of the soup, because ait doesn't look particularly attractive.

[livejournal.com profile] thesane is here. We have spent a lot of time doing handwork and talking. It's good to see her again. I also made hot cross buns (but kept most of the dough to use on Sunday).

For this winter, we ordered an entire cord (about 3.6m2) of mixed gum and pine. It arrived this evening. We spent the next hour or two stacking it in the garage. It turns out that a cord is a lot of wood - about twice what we had last winter. Admittedly, last winter we had to be somewhat frugal with it at times, but still!

I have finished level 7 of Settlers II. I feel quite pleased about this (and at the same time kinda annoyed about this level in particular because I won by capturing the gateway, rather than capturing the gateway and world domination).

Livejournal have given me an extra two weeks paid time because of the recent DDoS issues, although interestingly the time limit for my icons has not extended...
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Ha ha tee hee)
So whereas I surrendered to Facebook in order to be able to see pictures of my baby!nephew and stalk other relatives, the lure of videos of her nephew learning to walk is not enough to entice [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow into doing the same.

Accordingly, her sister has friended me so that she can see the videos.

I find this hilarious.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Yay! (penguins))
I have pictures of nephew, who is cute (as expected) and a tiny baby only by virtue of being a baby (he's a pretty decent size for newborn). They went home on Tuesday and are doing well. Although I did get a text from my sister saying something along the lines of: well, he's born, he's home, now what do we do with him?

Most of my Christmas present shopping is done, which is a relief. Only a couple more shops to venture into and I know what they are. On the other hand, since I work in town, there's no escaping the mad crowds.

Ended up skipping out on my last weeknight event (the firm Christmas do) due to catching [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose's cold. I was more or less sent home after the settlement was completed, and ended up napping on the couch. Being out of the air-con helped immensely, and hopefully I will be all go for the next three days, which are going to be a bit crazy at work. I am kinda hoping that the settlement on Monday (a purely commerical event) doesn't end up going through so we have actual time to sort out the new A&I issue. Christmas presents for lawyers are all finished, but one more card to write.

I was pretty lazy yesterday; got some washing done but didn't get around to hanging it out. It wasn't until this morning that I worked out that it was partially due to not having had a cup of coffee in the morning. Of course, the rest of it was due to being plague-ridden, so I think I get a pass.

Actually, I've spent a fair amount of the last few days reading. Now that Alessan finally convinced me to read the first one, I've been devouring CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series. How did I not get around to reading this before - cultural politics are usually right up my alley. I am now up to book 9 (or book 3 of the third trilogy), and understand the fourth trilogy is not yet finished. I will try some of her other books as well - fortunately, I have most of them as ebooks. I've read books four - 8 since Thursday.

I also read Indigo Springs by A M Dellamonica, which was and wasn't what I expected from the blurb. The blurb, for example, gives no hint that one of the view point characters is a civilan crisis negotiator, and that the surround story is set after everything goes to pieces. The two halves - then and now - eventually come together in an unsurprising, but competently written fashion. I'm not sure how much I liked it, certainly won't be buying it, but I will be looking out for the sequel in the library. I think I picked this up as a book rec either from Unshelved or [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll.

On Friday I read Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk. There were a few surprises, but it was mostly reasonable urban fantasy. I'll read others if I see them, but they didn't particularly grab me and I won't be looking for them.

No pictures this week; it's been raining since sometime on Friday. The garden needs it, but the farmers up north need it more. My grandad's family email this week said they got an inch and a half of rain, which helped, but wasn't nearly enough. I think we've had at least that today.

I should probably go and get some more cleaning done - we have a flat inspection tomorrow and it's the new person.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (By the prickling of my thumbs)
Finally home again, and am feeling somewhat better after a nap and another cup of tea. I'll cut this, since it's getting rather long. Also, the only reason I remember what I was doing is because the timetable is in front of me.

Con Report )

I should also note that the overseas visitors enjoyed themselves a lot, and somehow (I found out about this when I was drunk, but it's still omg, what are you thinking, and kinda hilarious) Norman Cates has been roped into heading a NZ bid for the 2020 Worldcon - there's even a website, here.

The hotel we were using - the Quality Inn/Comfort Hotel - on Cuba St was absolutely fantastic and I would recommend them (and use them again) for a convention like this.

In other news, plumbing dramas )

Work tomorrow is going to be flatstick and kinda awful; it's billing and will be really busy. Also, I go on leave on Wednesday. I should email myself at work everything I need to print out.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Dilbert - Hiding the dirt)
We ran our six hours without essential electricity drill today. We left the fridge going, the hot water cylinder, allowed the dryer to finish when it was still running at 3:00pm, and turned on the outside light so [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow didn't walk into the barbeque when she got home in the dark.

Things we discovered:

  1. Potato and kumara take about an hour and a half in the fire and taste absolutely delicious, particularly the kumara, which caramelises slightly;
  2. The fire will sufficiently heat butter so garlic butter can be made for garlic bread;
  3. Tea light candles do not in fact give off much light, even if you're using about 20 of them;
  4. The tall candle tapers need not to be in the heat or they slump;
  5. Putting mirrors behind the candles increases the level of light;
  6. Embroidery by candlelight is hard - how to ruin your eyes 101;
  7. It's so quiet;
  8. Don't put lots of tea light candles on a metal baking tray on a glass table (we didn't crack the table, which is good, but note for next time);
  9. If it's miserable weather, like tonight, arrange things so that the person barbequeing is standing in the shelter of the front door, rather than in the rain;
  10. Electric light is awesome.

We were actually fine in terms of supplies. Things we would like to get include another torch, particularly a free-standing upright one to use instead of gazillons of candles, and some actual candle holders, rather than using jam jars, small dishes and plates. But those are all along the lines of creature-comforts, rather than necessities, so I feel fairly good about our state of preparation.

Of course, we have a huge mess to clear up now, but we are all taking a break, checking the internet (oh, the addiction) and having a hot drink.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Moving bouncy)
My parents woke me up around 9.30am this morning to say that they were leaving now and could I unlock the door so they could get out? This was easily achived, but by then Jemima was whining for her breakfast and I was too awake to go back to sleep.

Currently, I am trying to a) work up the enthusiasm to go down to the garage to get more firewood (actually necessary); b) decide whether I can be bothered making Diana's Chocolate-Caramel Brownies to take into work tomorrow (probably a good idea); c) make lactose-free apple cake for gaming tomorrow night (maybe). I should also have lunch.

For sometime we have been planning to have an electricity-free drill to test our preparedness for an emergency. We're not doing this with complete thoroughness, I have to admit - the experiment is planned to run from 3:00pm - 3:00pm, the fridge freezer is staying on, and we're not going to turn off the water. Given that the sun goes behind the hills shortly after 5:00pm and a southerly is expected to come through later today, this should be interesting.

other things that happened in the last two days )

Now I should actually do things.

The sound of the birds' wings as they flutter around in the pohutukawa by the deck occasionlly drowns out the music on the stereo. My cat is quite interested in this.

Next door are getting new pipes put in and I guess ours connects to them or something, because our plumbing has been disconnected too. It's getting to the point where I want to start cooking dinner, but I really don't want to cook until the water is running again.

Work is rather busy at the moment. It's good. I have a few bits and pieces I have to get done by the end of next Wednesday, but I think I will.

I want it to be the end of next Thursday already. Time is both dragging and racing and I'm not enjoying the anticipation.

Mmmm, food

nishatalitha: image: girl doing a cartwheel on a bench. ferns in foreground that look like koru (Cartwheel)
I have burninated food for the first time this season. It was good. Dinner was pork marinaded in bought orange and saffron aeoli, shrimp lightly marinaded in thai coriander and chilli dressing, chargrilled orange capsicum, baked potato and garlic bread. It was good.

Ankle and knee are doing much better. I definitely got the nerve somewhere in my knee - there's a patch where the skin in numb. Bruising is showing up on the ankle, but for all the damage and pain, there's remarkably little to show for it. Is this what it's like to not bruise easily?

I spent most of my day sitting on the couch in the lounge marathoning the end of season three Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was pretty good. Now for fic.

We have started planning our menu for Christmas, trying desperately not to overcater. We're not very good at not overcatering. There are so many good ideas for food... I will be making my Gran's cheesecake again, because that cheesecake is a thing of glory.

[livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose made fudge this evening. It is good.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Doughnut (Garfield))
For McDonalds, that is. Instead of going out somewhere nice for dinner tonight before grocery shopping, we went to McDonalds, because we are out for a very expensive dinner on Saturday and it was raining, so Wishbone on Parliament grounds or in front of the Cenotaph was not an option.

I rather regret it.

The chicken-bacon deluxe was not worth it. Much worse than the last McDonalds I had (which was breakfast before the bookfair). I don't mind the occasional breakfast at McDonalds. But dinner? Not so much. I've been feeling kinda queasy since. I am drinking peppermint tea in the hopes that this will help.

Test #1 is over. I know I made the wrong reference to a question on the PPSA, because I had time at the end of the drafting, so was going through my copy and highlighting relevant bits (but because those bits are now highlighted, that won't be a problem again). I didn't manage to finish the short-answer question section, but I don't think anyone else in the class managed to either. The usual answer five questions out of seven in an hour, but we lost ten minutes of that to reading time. I would have rather that came off the drafting section, because the drafting was just some Director's resolutions and a plain English letter explaining clauses 14.1 and 15.1 of the standard ADLS Deed of Lease (repair and maintenance, and access for repair and maintenance), which are not that complicated, frankly.

On the other hand, there were three sets of questions on the Companies Act 1993, which were pretty basic, so I did those, the one on the Insurance Law Reform Act (I forget which one), because it was on subject to average and I'd done the homework questions on that recently, and another one, but I can't remember what that was about, either.

Test #2 is next Tuesday, which will be on the basics of criminal law and on family law. I will have to do a lot more study for that one, because I don't work in the area and am not nearly as comfortable with it. Not tonight though.
nishatalitha: image: cherry tree in flower against blue sky with clouds. white surround to image on bottom and left sides (Cherry tree)
So this feels like a most unproductive and enjoyable weekend. I have spent much of the last two days watching stuff in our fire-heated lounge. The day felt much longer than it really should.

Soon, I will make tracks towards packing my gym bag (gym, not walking in tomorrow, I feel) and organising lunch. And then I will go to bed and it will be good.

I must stop opening firefox too soon after starting Annabelle. She then crashes and I lose all my open tabs. I'm tagging things more frequently on delicious as a result, but there are some things I don't want tagged, because I'm just waiting for a chance to read them. Oh well.

It's cold and raining outside. We don't get the worst of the southerly, since we back onto a hill and face northwest, but it's still pretty cold. We get insulation next Friday. I'm still gloating.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Bugger Alle This - Good Omens)
I keep trying and failing to compose a witty yet sarcastic letter to one of my lawyers regarding his lack of ability to get invoice narrations to me before lunchtime today. I know he's been busy lately with purchasing a restaurant franchise for one of our clients. That does not mean that I want to be gathering WIP and reprinting prebills at 5.00pm on the last day of the month. Especially when he has said that he doesn't have time to check them - oh, isn't it nice to be trusted - and is sure they're fine.

Gah!

Fortunately, the partners seem to have learned their lessons and were around to sign everything off, so once I had the narrations, it went pretty smoothly (apart from the bit where I remembered at the very last minute that we're giving a 10$ discount to one of our clients and had to hastily put that in).

The chair saga continues. Yesterday, a nice man from a manufacturer came in, had a look at my chair and said the only kneeling chairs on the five star castors available was the one that killed my neck when I tried it. They had one that looked comfortable, but was on rollers, so didn't have the side to side mobility that I need.

Today, they brought down a bright red brand new chair with a really bizarre curve to the back (by which I mean the back curved out a lot, very abruptly, and then went back in equally abruptly). I gave it a try, wondered why it had been sent to me and eventually sent it back up as not working for me. Apparently, it was meant to go to someone else.

Currently I'm switching between my kneeling chair and a standard office chair (which is more or less comfortable enough, thank you) in order to train myself to be accustomed to a standard chair at work again. Perhaps I can get my kneeling chair recovered or something. Oh well, I can probably get mine re-upholstered.

Our property manager has handed our tenancy over to her new partner. He's doing nothing wrong. He's even remembering to email all three of us rather than just one, which is a first for our landlords. But. His attitude is such that he's managed to annoy all three of us and the part where he said he had tried to contact us by phone, but couldn't get hold of us, requested all my contact details again, despite having phoned me at work on Monday morning and I had no missed numbers on my cell or desk phone was just FAIL.

Still, Friday tomorrow and dinner out. I'm looking forward to it.

None of my previous landlords ever bothered doing a flat inspection. I don't recall ever having one in Newtown; the closest Harbour View Rd got to it was the landlord coming around and asking what needed fixing (nearly everything); and at the last place, after their first visit to discuss Crazy Downstairs Neighbour Lady's noise complaint, they poked their heads in once a year to give us a bottle of wine and Christmas mince pies. So this is my first proper flat inspection ever.

But new property manager has poked her head in once already, when letting the downstairs flat, so I don't anticipate there being a problem. I'll still be glad when it's over, though.

Things to mention to the property manager:

The washing machine's dislike of doing more than three or four loads in a row and requiring an hour switched off at the wall before being willing to work again.

That the halogen lights in the kitchen keep blowing, including the ones she replaced before we moved in.

The cost of the replacement plugs for the laundrey and kitchen (with receipts to give her).

Holidays

Comrademojo came around this morning and endeavoured to set up a wireless network for us (me having managed to mess the router up last night). He was partially sucessful - I now have wireless cable and [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose has cable through the cable. [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's computer did not take well to having a wireless network card installed and now doesn't want to get to Windows OS.

I also assembled a BBQ today (Dad having won it and not needing it, handed it over to me), which is a three burner and has side rests so that I'm not constantly looking around for where I put my tools. Cooked onions, potato and kumera wedges and pork steak on it tonight and it was good. Very good. And we were then able to eat at the table kindly given to us by my workmate MQM (in exchange for a dozen or so boxes and some beer). It is so good to eat at a table again!

New calendar has been hung and I even remembered to transfer over birthdays and anniversarys, heavy mirror has been hung (on hooks that are supposed to take up to 35 kgs) and general placement for art has been worked out, which will probably be hung tomorrow.

General plans for the week: call Telecom and say thanks, but no thanks for the free dial-up, we've switched to Telstra due to your lack of ability to provide us with broadband and it's working out well for us so far; read; do crossstitch - I'd like to finish Winter by the time I go back to work and made a reasonable start on Spring; cook more on my new BBQ.

It's good to be on holiday.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Life is toying with me (Garfield))
My hair looked very fluffy today. I still very much like the new look and length, but it's settling down and hasn't looked the same two days in a row yet.

Showed another couple through the house this afternoon. They took an application form away with them, but I doubt we'll hear back.

Have also packed seven fairly large boxes of books. I've packed all my mass-market paperbacks and comics. That leaves the manga, hardbacks and non-fiction, all of which are more awkward to pack.

Our lounge does not look like our lounge now - the large mirror has been taken down and the holes where the house nails were patched with sealant prior to being touched up with paint. My room still looks much like my room, aside from one mostly empty bookcase and the complete lack of ornaments.

The cats are nervous and tense. Jemima has been through this before and is only really coming inside in the mornings and evenings in order to be fed. Tobias doesn't really know what's going on. I keep getting my weeks mixed up and thinking it's next week when it's not.

Still not sleeping particularly well - it's taking me ages to drop off once I hop into bed. Accidentally stayed up until 3am today watching all the episodes of 7 Periods with Mr Gormsby that I hadn't seen (about nine or so). It's a very good show and I recommend it.

Packing

The trademe ad for our house went up today and not long after we had a call from a couple who asked to come up and view it. They seemed nice and we will pdf their application form off on Monday. We also had a couple come through on their way back from a do at the British High Commission in Karori. They were pleasant enough and took an application form away with them, but our place will not be classy enough for them.

I think we're packing as though we're moving this Thursday, rather than the one after.

I like my new haircut.

Choices

So the place we looked at tonight: lovely, what we wanted, bit more than we want to pay, on the Mairangi and we're all mentally arranging our furniture in it. We applied for it, property manager is checking references tomorrow. We would have to move in three weeks.

Called our landlords to warn them, chatted for a bit, she said her son had definitely decided to move out in January and it's a shame we'd found somewhere. I said we would still be interested but would need a definite date. We should get to go look sometime in the next day or so. We could move in late January.

It's hard to know what to hope for.

Damn property companies who believe that if you can physically fit a double bed in a room, even if you can't get anything else in there, then it is a double bedroom. That was a gorgeous house with two actual double bedrooms and one small single.

The search continues.
nishatalitha: text: Ooops I read the whole thing (all caps) image: background crumped white paper (Ooops I read the whole thing)
Exams tomorrow. Despite my almost complete lack of study, I don't actually feel underprepared for these, although I doubt I will feel that way when sitting Estates tomorrow afternoon. Still, at least Property is in the morning and I have a couple of hours between the two, so can cram some more, if I need to. I have at least gone through and highlighted relevant legislation, something I haven't done for any other exam.

Read By Blade and Cloth by Helen E. Davis this evening (recced by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias) and quite enjoyed her take on Elves. It was a bit patchy in parts and occasionally skipped perspective very quickly, but in some scenes it was clearly deliberate. Worth US$5 for the e-book. There were three sample chapters available and then I wanted to finish it.

The wind is howling outside and it will be cold enough for me to be comfortable wearing the jacket I have worn to almost every exam since third form; my heavy denim one with big pockets and autumn tapestry inserts that I got from Orlando in September twelve years ago when I was thirteen. We got it in a large, so I wouldn't outgrow it as fast and I remember it costing US$90 - I think I paid half, although that bit is unclear. It's tradition now that I at least take it to every exam I sit.

I have both cats in my room at the moment, which is a rare thing. When I went out before, Tobias looked lonely, so I brought him in, and now he's stretched out against the wall by the door. Jemima has moved from being on my bed to sitting directly next to the heater. This is Jemima's space; Tobias wasn't allowed in here when he was a kitten so she would have somewhere that was hers. But they haven't fought - well, Jemima hissed a bit, but that's hardly uncommon - and now Tobias is taking a bath. Maybe they're tired as well.

Picked a sprig of blossom from the apple tree the other day and stuck it in a small vase. I know it's flowering, but I've never seen water go down in a vase so quickly! I have to refill the emptied vase about twice a day: morning and night
