Spring has arrived with a triumph of fine weather. I have been in short-sleeves most of the week (still wearing stockings with my skirts, though) and spent most of yesterday afternoon lying in the sun in the lounge or on the deck with a book or the laptop reading. I've spent most of this afternoon in the same way. You can tell it's spring, rather than summer by the recent spate of frosts in the morning and the way the air cools late afternoon, which makes me start thinking that slippers might be a plan.

I am currently resenting the fact that I really need to do some thinking and homework. I have redone my terrible answers to the questions on the Sale of Goods Act 1908 to be handed in. I am currently putting off doing the set of questions on the Insurance Law Reform Acts 1977 and 1985 which I like even less than the Sale of Goods Act. I like the Personal Properties Securities Act 1999 even less than those three, but at least questions on it are usually able to be answered by looking at the Act.

I went to the DCM bookfair yesterday morning with the flatmates and was very restrained - I only bought 13 books and 3 CDs. Of course, five of those books were priced, and the CDs were priced, so while I was under budget, it wasn't by much. I'm rather pleased with some of the purchases - a random biography of Nancy Wake which I've never seen before (I still really want a copy of The White Mouse, Trio - a CD by Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris, of which I have Trio II already. It has already been dumped straight on the relaxation playlist for listening to before bed. Also found a copy of The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which is a book I adored when I was younger.

Got to church this morning for the first time in a month. I know this because the last time I went it was also communion and we only have communion on the first Sunday of each month. It was an interesting sermon on chapter 6 of Galatians, the final in a series on Galatians, which I managed to miss all of. Next week, apparently will be a precursor to the November series on saints and heroes, and all I currently have on next weekend is a haircut and colour, so I should manage to get to that. Church two weeks in a row - won't that be a shocker?

This winter has been cold, grey and miserable so far. Where are Wellington's wild winds and glorious storms? It's nearly a month since midwinter and I only just noticed that it's starting to get lighter earlier and darker later. The only vaguely sunny days seem to be midweek and by the time the day ends, it's raining again. I haven't dried washing outside for months and everything is constantly damp. I might as well be back in the 'tron!

I did go outside for half an hour at lunchtime today, wandered around the waterfront, took a few photos and it conveniently started raining again just as I was about to head back to work. Most of the photos didn't quite come out like I intended (and to get the shot I want for one of them, I really need to be either half a foot taller or stand on a box), but a couple are okay, even if not what I was after.

Photos under cut )

I get to play frisbee tonight, since it's still school holidays. Hopefully someone has a spare Dreaming Creature/light blue shirt, or I will be playing in either my white Lone Creature shirt or my old Planet Hollywood t-shirt. The real trick is going to be not to let my fingers get too cold to play.

Exams tomorrow. Despite my almost complete lack of study, I don't actually feel underprepared for these, although I doubt I will feel that way when sitting Estates tomorrow afternoon. Still, at least Property is in the morning and I have a couple of hours between the two, so can cram some more, if I need to. I have at least gone through and highlighted relevant legislation, something I haven't done for any other exam.

Read By Blade and Cloth by Helen E. Davis this evening (recced by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias) and quite enjoyed her take on Elves. It was a bit patchy in parts and occasionally skipped perspective very quickly, but in some scenes it was clearly deliberate. Worth US$5 for the e-book. There were three sample chapters available and then I wanted to finish it.

The wind is howling outside and it will be cold enough for me to be comfortable wearing the jacket I have worn to almost every exam since third form; my heavy denim one with big pockets and autumn tapestry inserts that I got from Orlando in September twelve years ago when I was thirteen. We got it in a large, so I wouldn't outgrow it as fast and I remember it costing US$90 - I think I paid half, although that bit is unclear. It's tradition now that I at least take it to every exam I sit.

I have both cats in my room at the moment, which is a rare thing. When I went out before, Tobias looked lonely, so I brought him in, and now he's stretched out against the wall by the door. Jemima has moved from being on my bed to sitting directly next to the heater. This is Jemima's space; Tobias wasn't allowed in here when he was a kitten so she would have somewhere that was hers. But they haven't fought - well, Jemima hissed a bit, but that's hardly uncommon - and now Tobias is taking a bath. Maybe they're tired as well.

Picked a sprig of blossom from the apple tree the other day and stuck it in a small vase. I know it's flowering, but I've never seen water go down in a vase so quickly! I have to refill the emptied vase about twice a day: morning and night

Just watched Cyrano de Bergerac and it was excellent. It's been a very long time since a movie made me cry. The last one I remember was Little Women when Beth died - I managed to eek out a few tears for that. Or maybe that was the book...

The wind is blowing strongly outside. I love the wind, I really do, which is good since I live in Wellington, but I could do without it making my building sway enough to make me slightly queasy, especially since I no longer possess the wrist bands I used to wear to prevent car-sickness. I should take in the lemon and ginger tea we're not drinking... work would be a useful place to abandon it.

I passed my Estates test acceptably well. Have a lot of work to do before the final exams in a month. I really should have done some work on it tonight, but didn't feel like it. Oh, well. And we have a week's break next week! No making up time for an entire week. Awesome!

Just to be clear: I support the bus drivers stop work meeting. They are an extremely important part of the Wellington region transport network and should get paid accordingly. I am aware that they chose the time for this meeting (10.00am to 2.30pm) to prevent inconvenience to as many people as possible. I am also aware that they advertised the meeting.

Which doesn't stop me from being peeved because I'm still cold from waiting at the busstop for an hour and a half and missing a meeting I'd set up for 11.00am. No one mentioned the stop work to me, and since it's my primary means of transport, it kinda screwed me up. Fortunately, I've been able to reschedule everything for tomorrow and have just swapped my plans over. Hopefully, tomorrow will be sunnier and thus nicer to go through the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary.

...on the other hand, it meant I read about 200 pages of The Neutronium Alchemist by Peter F. Hamilton. Which, in combination with forgetting my cellphone is how about an hour could pass without me realising just how long I'd been waiting.

I will make a warm lunch and maybe turn the heater on. I'm missing the warmth of Tauranga already. Yesterday was nice; it was warm and windy and not too hot. Today the cloud still hides the top of the hills across the valley and there is a definite chill to the wind.

Finished reading The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchet last night. My copy is a compact Discworld book, which means it measures about 9cm x 7.5cm x 2cm and is in about size 8 font. Not my favourite Pratchett, but still entertaining. And I like the Luggage. Am more pleased that I brought The House That Sailed Away back down with me. While I only purchased my copy when in high school, it still entertains me.

I don't know why I do this to myself. I know what I need to do for the LARP character editing, I knew roughly how much time it would take, I knew when I needed to get it done by. Yet I still waited until the day before the meeting to go through and edit things. It's mostly done now and I'll stop for the night I think. I just have to write the background for Pruss and Vane and then I'm done. I'll do that at lunchtime tomorrow, I think.

It's just incredibly stupid. I hope that I create better habits when I start the Legal Executive course in February. The enrolment pack arrived today and once more I am glad that my parents saw fit to give me multiple copies of my birth certificate signed by a JP when I left home. I just pulled another one out of the plastic sleeve and attached it to the document. A much harder thing is my ID photo. I think I still have one left from five years ago, however, I certainly do not look the same anymore. And I don't really want to have to trek out to Porirua just to get my photo taken!

I am currently rereading Curse of Chalion interspersed with other books. It doesn't quite grab me in the same way as it used to (I actually have to be in the right mood to read it now and I only read it three or four times a year) but is still really enjoyable. I can just sink into it and follow what happesns and it stays good even on the somethingoranother reread. I'm not sure how many times I've read it. I stopped counting around 12 or so. It must be 20+ now.

What I really need to read, of course, is a non-fiction book for my santa resolution. It's nearly two weeks into the year and I haven't started one. I think I'll go and pick something easy now and stick that into my bag. Then I won't have a choice!

Have been listening to an old Amy Grant tape (The Collection) a lot lately. I should probably find a CD of it so I don't wear the tape out. This is the tape, that along with a couple of sing-along tapes (GT & the Halo Express etc and two sing-along tapes of Bible verses) that kept my siblings and me occupied during long car journeys (anything over half an hour). I still associate this one with going to Anaura Bay in the summer, with my head leaning against the window, half dozing and half watching the scenery go by, the wind brushing through the top of my hair and warmth.

The weather is ridiculous. I am really really really looking forward to going up to Tauranga after Kapcon, not only because I have two weeks off work, but also because Tauranga has to be having better weather than we are here and I am so tired of grey skies. Coldest December on record for 70 years, I bet this is going to be the wettest January! And I'd be glad if the weather decided to prove me wrong!

With all the heavy rain over the past day or so, our backyard has flooded quite impressively. There is only a little bit of actual grass left above water. I took some photos, but the device I use to upload them to my computer appears to have broken (at least, the computer knows it's there, but doesn't know anything else about it), and I think I'm going to have to replace it. It is physically broken, and I haven't used it for months. The last time I used it it was broken, so I don't know what happened in the meantime. Gah, windows.

However, not only is our backyard flooded, but also the access paths. And since the path was sealed recently (which is wonderful, generally), the flooding is worse than ever, requiring actual use of the other path down. Seriously, I inched my way along the second rail of the fence to get past the three metre long, ankle depth stretch of water blocking my way out. WCC will be notified about this.

[livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose and I had to go out in the pouring rain this morning to pick up C's birthday present, which we'd more or less decided on, but had to actually purchase. I also bought myself a shiny gold coloured bracelet with purple and green flowers on it. But we were at the shop as it opened (dripping wet, both of us), and the guy was really nice, and let us pick through things, and didn't make us feel silly because we don't know anything about antiques and very little about jewellery. I've bought presents for other people there which have worked out well.

Then we came home and I had quicksies and she had toasties, and I lit the fire and did hanwork, while [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose went off to a work do. C. came home from work then, and I did some more handwork. The sampler - nearly finished. I have three squares and three small hearts to do out of a total of five squares, seven small hearts and one large heart, and then it's onto the beading. Hopefully, I can get a bit done tomorrow, as well.

I also got two bunches of Early Cheer to go on the table, because I really like the smell, and it was two for $5, which is quite cheap for those flowers.

Last night was kinda funny. [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose and I got home at the same time, ate cheese and crackers and pastrami, along with half a bottle of wine (the pinot noir chardonnay that I won at work last week - it was fizzy!), and then cleaned the lounge, before having pancakes. Of course, while the other two went to bed at normal time (around eleven or so), I then felt wide awake, so I spent the ensuing three hours or so cleaning and tidying my room. All that still needs doing is the vaccuming.
