I managed to sleep through my cat eating a bird beside my bed.

I have no idea if she killed it there or not.

The You Choose 40 tonight on C4 was covers. Standouts were the usual - Whitney Houston's "I will Always Love You", Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", Johnny Cash's "Hurt" as well as The Ataris "Boys of Summer". What really made me crack up was Fallout Boy and John Meyar doing "Beat It". Pure crack. I'm not sure fandom could have done any better.

Got my hair dyed and cut today. It's very dark; three layers - a faintly reddy brown top and bottom, and the same violet as I had last time in the middle. I'm still very fond of that colour. It's just above my shoulders again, as that was a good length. However, if for some reason, I'm not wearing my glasses, I should really wear some mascara or something.

My cat has been asleep in my laptop case for most of the day. Pania was not in the case, however - she has been in the lounge so I could do homework and study. And I have. I still really dislike insurance law, but I've done the questions for that now (not sure how well) and I get to move onto company law instead, which is preferable.

Am very tired (went to sleep stupidly late last night) and was very tired all week, so given that I am having to retype every eighth word or so, I think I shall go to sleep now.

My cat just came in my room and investigated the spot where she woke me by eating a rat's head at 1am this morning. I dumped the rat in a bag in the kitchen bin, kicked the cat out of my room and went back to bed. Nearly twenty-four hours later, you would think she would know it's not there anymore.

Miserable day today: I still have a headache, my eyes still hurt, still really tired and my shoulders have started aching. Also, lunch with a friend turned into lunch listening to said friend rant about how angry he is with his life and it actually sounded like things were starting to go right for him a bit. He is often entertaining like this, but today I just couldn't deal.

One more day of work, lunch with ComradeMojo and (hopefully) skipping off work early to see Dad, since he's here. Then the weekend, and I can sleep as much as I need.

Oooh, I can take more panadol now.

I seriously felt like crying in the work bathrooms at 4.00pm today, which is both hilarious and sad. I didn't though - read the work things on how to manage swine flu and crossed off how many on the list of symptoms that I fitted.

[livejournal.com profile] thesane came up to Wellington for the weekend and we had a very good time. I saw pretty much all the Canada photos and there was much talk about handwork and sewing and calling things silly and her crazy. She tested out [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's sofa bed and said that it wasn't the most uncomfortable sofa bed she's ever slept on.

But she is also a very clever person who made me this for my birthday/Christmas present.

The entire thing, when it's closed, fits into the palm of my hand and when it's open to its full extent my hand almost fits inside it.

Speaking of embroidery, my brother's sampler arrived in my inbox after several increasingly frustrated emails. Eventually, they contacted the designer and got her permission to email me the pattern. So I have the pattern, printed out and saved in various places, the evenweave and most of the threads. Had fewer of the threads than I expected and am missing some I am sure I have. Will email the list of three or so I'm missing to Mum and see if she has them.

Willow Fabrics has therefore been upgraded from 'never use them' to 'they came through for me in the end'. And I have .pdf of the pattern, which is all I wanted in the first place and it would have saved a lot of hassle if it could have been that way from the start. Oh well, it's an easy pattern. Doubt I'll have it finished before I go to Tauranga for Christmas on Saturday, but if I don't have it finished by the time I come home, I will be very surprised. And then I shall take it into Walrus Gallery, who very much impressed me with their framing last time, and get it framed before I got to Christchurch at the end of January. Shorter timetable than I was wanting, but doable.

The cat managed to get comfortable on my lap and then almost fall off. She hasn't settled properly since, but has discovered that the top of the drawers beside my bed, now that there's a narrower tape player there, makes a good resting spot. Not that this means she doesn't feel the need to move things around so she has enough room for a bath as well.

Our landlords came around tonight, as expected, gave us a Christmas present, which was lovely of them, admired our garden and may have a bigger house for us to move into in a few months, a place which, while near the Wadestown shops, sounds absolutely ideal in other respects.

I currrently have my cat sitting on my lap, purring and being affectionate. The typing will probably annoy her soon and she will then migrate to the end of my bed but for now, all is good.

Played frisbee again tonight. We (Happy) won quite convincingly, but we had to work for it. There was one nine-minute point ([livejournal.com profile] mashugenah checked). Still, I felt fitter than I did last week. My cutting is still poor and my forehand needs game practice but my ankle handled it without any hassle. Also got to the gym yesterday and today so things are going well. And it was lots of fun. I had enough court time and while I expect to be a little stiff tomorrow, I don't think it will take very long to wear off.

Jemima has migrated to my bed and I shall join her there very shortly because it is warm and I am cold. Tobias, I believe, is still outside.

Am still rereading Heyer. Finished The Spanish Bride day before yesterday, was temporarily distracted by The Fire Opal (Catherine Asaro's lastest Arronsdale book), which I enjoyed, but then I'm a sucker for theology and fantasy mixed, particularly if it's done well and a trashy Mills&Boon before reading more of Journey West (nearly finished Vol. III) and settling on The Grand Sophy, because it's fun.

Someone on my flist recently posted a link to a book challenge community, wherein you set yourself a goal of how many books you're going to read in 2008 and keep track of them in this community. Someone has set themselves a goal of 600 books. I don't think I'd read that many in a year now, but probably 300 or so. I once tried to keep a book list. The longest I managed was for about six months before I got bored. I forget how many books I had on the list when I stopped keeping it. At school, I never managed to keep a list, particularly if we also had to review what we read. Which would be fine, if you were only reading one or two books a week and those the school knew about but less fine if you're reading one or two a day, and (depending on what year I was) several Mills&Boon as well. Hardly the sort of thing one wants to report to your teacher. I usually picked my favourite two or three and reviewed them properly. And kept the list for about five. If called on, I would say what I'd read and, oh, I forgot to write them all down. Sorry miss, I can't remember everything I read.

Haven't been doing terribly well with the goal to read a new non-fiction book every two weeks. It's hard work and something you have to think about. Still, I've read more this year than I probably would have otherwise, so that's okay.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Silence heralds joy)
I have been vastly distracted this week with study and embroidery. No, not my dragon. I did a Christmas decoration from a kit that Mum bought when I was up north earlier this year. It's very beaded and stuffed and I may yet do another one for our flat. Test was disturbingly easy, so either I'm doing something right or I'm doing something wrong - and I'm not the only one in my class who thought this. We started ten-fifteen minutes late and I walked out twenty minutes early and this was a two hour test!

Have been reading actual books a bit lately. Ally by Karen Traviss (futuristic environmentalism taken to extremes), Kushiel's Scion by Jacqueline Carey (teenage angst with bad BDSM), Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie (light-hearted romance with food) and A History of Modern Japan by Richard Storry (interesting, especially around WWII, which reminded me of the army divisions in Barrayar). Am going to read Bismarck: the man and the statesman by A.J.P. Taylor next, as well as other books.

Legacy by Lois McMaster Bujold is released shortly. Sample chapters are available here. Only one is up at this stage, but I understand there'll be another one or two before the book is released in ten days or so. I'm looking forward to getting my copy and (eventually) being able to put my two hardcovers together to see the complete picture in front of me.

Jenny Craig's is going well. Am having trouble managing to eat everything on my menu, and miss not eating what I cook, but it's working and that's the main thing. Have lost weight, which pleases me.

The cold weather appears to have settled in. We had a fire on Tuesday night and it was so nice being able to get wood from under the house and know that there was plenty to burn. Some of the gorse is probably still too long to fit in the fireplace safely, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

Tobias remains entertaining. He and Jemima have begun to get along better. I kinda enjoy watching them chase each other around the lounge in the morning before I leave, especially when Jemima drugs herself up on catnip. Other than that, he still has to learn about not digging claws in and the like. And to leave various things alone and not jump on the table. He is growing at a phenomonal rate.

LARP writing is going well. I need to contact N to confirm things. We have yet to name characters, but most of them have a history and connections and goals. Over the next couple of weeks we have to name them and post a list for people indicate interest in. Still, Confusion is in August, so we have plenty of time, really.

Last night C and I went around to [livejournal.com profile] darthsappho and [livejournal.com profile] tofulope where we watched, various, The Call of Cthulu (the recent silent release) which was pretty good, Renaldo: first sheep on the moon ([livejournal.com profile] stephanie_pegg, I never knew you felt like that about sheep) and more Blackadder.

And now, seeing as my alarm is set for another six and a half hours and my fingers are going numb, I should go to bed.
nishatalitha: slightly crumpled white sheets, small text= "sleep now" (Sleep now)
My knees are colourful. Unlike F. I actually remember how they got that way. They only hurt if I kneel on them or bend them too far. For the first time months, I used a normal computer chair all day. It was strange and I want to use my ergonomic kneeling chair again. I will try it tomorrow.

We had dinner at an Italian resturant on Courtney Pl before we went grocery shopping. It was C's suggestion and it was a very good suggestion. I had salmon risotto with rice, cream, spinch, spring onion and pine nuts. It was excellent and I would totally have it again. Then we shared a slice of baked cheesecake for dessert which was nice, but I think I prefer the ones you set. I should make another one (two) someday. It was good.

It is time to go and fall into bed now. The cat is somewhere in my room but I don't know where. Probably on the windowsill.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Tree and Dragon)
Apparently, as one set of stupid birds die off (presents to me from my cat), another set of stupid birds move in, are given a few months to become complacent, and then become presents in their turn. For my part, I could do without such gifts. I'm not convinced this one was a thrush though.

Watched Heroes episode seven tonight. It was interesting, although not as fun as some of the other episodes. There are more new character interactions though and that's interesting.

Reread Helm by Steven Gould today. It's a neat book - it explains without complete loss of history mass migration from earth, adherence to literacy and sanitation, allowing a clean society where people know about things like blood transfusions in the same world where they use swords and bows. It was the first book by Gould that I read and it's probably still my favourite, even if Blind Waves is loads of fun.

Found that I had actually read Paths Not Taken, the latest Nightside book after all and couldn't be bothered rereading it. I think I've only got three of the books we borrowed from Alessan left to read. On the other hand, tonight is the only week night that I'm actually home this week. Tomorrow is frisbee, Wednesday is grocery shopping, Thursday C. and I are going out to dinner with a couple from church to a Cambodian place before going to a meeting, Friday there is a quiz thing with the Dunedin RPG crowd. Saturday morning is frisbee practice. And sometime in all of this, I need to hit more gorse trunks with an axe. It's all about the instant gratification, baby.

C., as you may know, is studying for her MLS and her current paper is on archiving. I think it sounds fascinating. However, I was somewhat bemused to find from her tonight that due to issues with copyright and ownership, it is far less hassle for everyone involved if we just throw away all the old letters and schoolbooks and receipts and whatnot that we dug out from under the house when we were making room for the firewood than it is for us to donate them to somewhere like the Turnbull Library, as we have no clear title to them.

[livejournal.com profile] atomicsusan, you don't happen to know a Rosalie MacGlaskin or MacDonald or someone associated with a catering company who lived here in the 1970s? There was a rotting lever arch file of old bills and recepits of which one of the more recent dates was 1977. I might yet go through some of the envelopes and see what stamps can be saved. There was an old photo album (April 1977, I think) full of photos of a young blonde girl. I think they were taken here, but some of them have surroundings (flat grass, wall of bush) where it's kinda hard to tell.

I used to think that finding something like this would be a fascinating treasure and I would love to sift through it all. I neglected to realise just how much the rot and the mold and the junk would put me off. My versions of finding this sort of stuff tended to involve a dry attic where things might crumple, but it would be due to age and dryness, not a slow compost into the ground under the house.

We really need to own our own house...

I was somewhat more awake this morning when I went to catch the bus than I am usually. For this, I blame the cat.

I had just climbed out of the shower when I heard a squawking and growling sound, and thought that the cat was being chased by something, and it served her right.

But no.

The squawking got louder, and I burst out of the bathroom to see Jemima carry a bird under my desk, getting there just in time to hear the crunch as she bit down on its neck. I yanked her away by her collar, and she started purring. The bird stayed still.

Jemima got dumped in the kitchen, I got ready for work, the bird didn't move.

I got a couple of plastic bags to pick it up with, then noticed that its chest was rising and falling very rapidly. After I picked it up, it started moving, strugging feebly. I struggled with the window (I thought I would see if it could still fly) and it got away; flapped over to the other window, which I then opened, and flew off, somewhat lopsided, leaving a pile of feathers under my desk and scattered around my room.

This is the second bird in a week. She might love me, but does she really have to show it by giving me birds?

...apparently Terry Pratchet is doing a new Tiffany Aching book. I will be interested to see what it's like.

Went to see Stick It with [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose this evening. A gymnastics movie! It was lots of fun, although aspects of it felt very disjointed.

I took this photo of the cat a couple of weeks ago, and finally got around to finding where I'd stored it when I moved it to the computer.

I love our flat.

I have spent the last few days in a haze of exhaustion. I spent two days busily at work, moved, and have spent the ensuing three days busily at work, with the result that I am really looking forward to my day off tomorrow, and doubt I'll feel well enough to go in if it so happens that they call me. I am not yet unpacked, and still have to do things like buy another bookcase, and put the mirror on the wall and useful things like that.

The cat seems to be settling in all right, from what I've seen of her. I haven't really been at home enough to find out. Still, I get to sleep in tomorrow morning, and while I'm really looking forward to that, I also imagine that I'll be waking and or getting up at the extremely late hour of nine o' clock, because my body is still adjusting.

Slightly less stiff now, which is promising. But I am really looking forward to having everything away and the boxes gone, and just being able to laze around in the sun, drink tea and do crossstitch, which I haven't done any for ages.

Went to Earthdawn tonight, and was fading towards the end, which means it's probably a good thing that I didn't go to Lace & Steel last night. Does anyone want to fill me in on what happened last night? And by anyone, I mean [livejournal.com profile] house_monkey, [livejournal.com profile] mashugenah, and Ivan the Terrible. Is my poor character still alive?
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (The day crawls)
I finally worked out how to make animated icons in photoshop. I'm not very skilled at it yet, especially at saving them in the right file size for LJ, but I'm getting better at it. Made two from Bujold quotes, one from a random photo I took a while ago, and one with lots of dice for [livejournal.com profile] mashugenah because he was having a bad day, and I felt like experimenting. Mash's one is too fast, I think, but I'm pretty happy with the others.

Work was okay, I suppose. I didn't mind it, really. We were two girls down, so I finished around five, and there were lots of stayovers, but even more rooms. And I don't know. I just feel kinda blah. Was enjoying chatting to [livejournal.com profile] mashugenah, but he's gone to bed, and I'm bored. I don't even really feel like reading. I could start rereading The God Eaters again.

Been reading a Diana Wynne Jones lately, just before bed, and thus woke up from a dream where Cat and Chrestomanci had to merge for some reason, only Cat got mixed up, and thought he had to split in two, one to stay in bed and have a normal life, and the other to go with Chrestomanci. And I was supposed to be watching the version of Cat that stayed in bed, so I got up a little bit late today.

The flat hunting is going slowly. I'm starting to get anxious about it, since I need to give notice in a week, if we want to move on Waitangi weekend, and I really want to have somewhere to move by then. There are places we're checking out, but still. In preparation for moving, I am getting the cat used to wearing a harness and lead. She's mostly okay with the harness, after wearing it fairly solidly for a couple of days, but isn't so keen on the lead. And I'm kinda paranoid about her running away, back here, so I'm working out plans to deal with that.

And of course, I have to be at the train station by 7am Saturday morning for this wedding. Ah, well, it'll be good to see people again.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Default)
I wish my cat didn't feel obliged to catch mice. Either that, or that there could be some way of stopping her from doing so, aside from a bell, which would drive me insane. It's not just the fact that I like mice; indeed, after having one living in our kitchen cupboard for a while, I am far less enamoured of them than I ever have been.

Regardless. She catches mice, and being a cat, she also eats them. And then, preferably just before I'm about to go to bed, she throws up. And cleaning up partially digested cat biscuits, jellymeat, grass, blood and guts, and a whole baby mouse (black fur) at one o' clock in the morning from one spot on the carpet and another two on the lino in the kitchen is not my idea of fun.

And then, of course, I feel obliged to share the love and joy with the rest of you.

I'm going to bed.
