I got my results today:

Litigation Law and Practice - B
Business Law and Practice - A+

Words cannot express how fucking relived I am. I am done!

Exams are over. Assuming I passed everything (and I think I've either passed comfortably or failed completely), that is it. I am done. I find out if this is true the week before Christmas.

Actually, the main drafting section of the exam (25 marks) was quite fun - perusing and making amendments (with those dammed reasons) on an Agreement for Sale and Purchase of a Business which was of such quality that the only place all the names were correct was the last page of the document (which is not part of the contract but there for everyone's convenience as to contacts). Our lecturer got us to do one of these earlier in the year and I'm really glad he did.

Exams were on Monday and Thursday, so the OOS has not been aggravated.

It's been so hard to look past today that I really don't know what to do with myself. Getting through October to Labour Weekend and through exams has been the focus for so long that there's now a giant gaping hole which my life is supposed to fill. I don't recall this from last year, although I think we were starting flat hunting at that point, so the search would have filled the gap, I guess.

The last time I really remember being like this this clearly was coming out of Bursary (2000 - so long ago) and at that point I only had a few days between end of exams and going to the US for a month - hardly any time at all to anticipate it, but I just could not look past those exams to do so. At least this time I have four whole days to myself before I go back to work.

...at least the weather was suitable for my denim jacket. I wore fingerless gloves for the first half, too. Easier on the hands.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (H2G2 - Style & sense)
So I had my first exam for this year today. This is exam five out of six over three years and the one I'm most concerned about. I don't do any litigation work at work, so I have no practical experience in the field. However, I didn't have any omg I have no idea what that is moments, which is only kinda reassuring. I was also writing very very close to time and I probably lost some marks on the drafting for lack of neatness (and yes, they can and do do that, despite it all being done by word processing nowadays). One more to go. I really hope I pass this one - it would be incredibly embarassing and shameful if I failed. I even studied!

Then I came home and since one of the players was away, we did a flashback episode to the black ice planet on which we found an alien archive. I managed to roll minus 4 (a critical failure) that delighted the GM and saw my script-immune character dumped completely under in a pool of black goo (very technical term for an alien liquid of interesting chemical composition). Then I voluntarily put myself in the hands of the alien archive and allowed it to reconfigure my brain on the fly so I could try and save the other two people who had also fallen into the substance, but not managed to get out.

...I note this was acceptable for me to do so because I volunteered to do so, with full knowledge that this was an untried and untested experiment by an alien on myself. Informed consent was more or less in place. It's not like we can have the alien archive up on charges for undue influence.

Had to jettison some of the alien archive which had contaminants in it (humans) and that will probably end up in one of the undersea volcanos. That hurt because I was still tied into the system at the time...

So [livejournal.com profile] get_together was excellent. However, one thing I learned from the weekend is to take the Monday after off work. Even if I'm not completely peopled out by Sunday night, I'm not going to want to see anyone on Monday. I woke up today in much the same state, so called in. I will have to go out - I have a lecture at 5.30pm and we should get our results back from the terms test two weeks ago.

cut for those who weren't there )

Right. Time to go. Hopefully, I didn't fail.

EDIT: Yay, I did not fail. I got 82.5% (I need to work on the basic criminal law aspect) and skipped out early because we were covering conflicts of interest and fiducary duties. Although these are intersting topics, I discovered that staying home from work today was the correct choice because thinking was a challenge.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Not the brightest prince (Merlin))
Oh, Merlin. You are all too stupid to live. How are you not dead yet?

Also, I got 87.5% in my Business Law & Practice paper, which is one weight off my mind. The other gets to be put from my mind for two weeks, since there is a week off next week. Anyone want to have lunch with me around 12.30 - 1.00pm for an hour on the waterfront next week?

Awesome link from the Bujold ML - Glass Microbes by Luke Jerram. You remember the virus plushies? These are glass sculptures of viruses and they are glorious.

This has been a good weekend. Logan Brown was fantastic as expected and we finished up just after the crowds came in after the rugby. The Hawthorne Lounge was unfortunately closed, we couldn't find Alice, and ended up at Pollux. We were favourably impressed by the bartender who said that there wasn't a cocktail list, but people could say what they were in the mood for and he would come up with something. He did pretty well for us, and the location is convenient (next to the Opera House), so we might well end up there again.

I have made two batches of italian parsley pesto (although the second was a double batch). The first was the Stephanie's Cook's Companion recipe that I like which uses peanuts and peanut oil, fish sauce and palm sugar. The second was the Joy of Cooking recipe, in which I substituted parsley for basil, toasted peanuts for pinenuts (since they're the only nuts we had in the house), and tasty cheese for parmesan. The garlic and olive oil remained the same. It tastes all right, although it may have been better with blanched peanuts, as it also has a very strong peanut flavour. I don't like blanched peanuts, so I toasted them. We now have a jar and a half of each type in the fridge. Bets are open as to whether there will be some left this time next week.

Study has been achieved; I have be reading through my notes on applying for legal aid and the criteria used, as well as the family law stuff.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Doughnut (Garfield))
For McDonalds, that is. Instead of going out somewhere nice for dinner tonight before grocery shopping, we went to McDonalds, because we are out for a very expensive dinner on Saturday and it was raining, so Wishbone on Parliament grounds or in front of the Cenotaph was not an option.

I rather regret it.

The chicken-bacon deluxe was not worth it. Much worse than the last McDonalds I had (which was breakfast before the bookfair). I don't mind the occasional breakfast at McDonalds. But dinner? Not so much. I've been feeling kinda queasy since. I am drinking peppermint tea in the hopes that this will help.

Test #1 is over. I know I made the wrong reference to a question on the PPSA, because I had time at the end of the drafting, so was going through my copy and highlighting relevant bits (but because those bits are now highlighted, that won't be a problem again). I didn't manage to finish the short-answer question section, but I don't think anyone else in the class managed to either. The usual answer five questions out of seven in an hour, but we lost ten minutes of that to reading time. I would have rather that came off the drafting section, because the drafting was just some Director's resolutions and a plain English letter explaining clauses 14.1 and 15.1 of the standard ADLS Deed of Lease (repair and maintenance, and access for repair and maintenance), which are not that complicated, frankly.

On the other hand, there were three sets of questions on the Companies Act 1993, which were pretty basic, so I did those, the one on the Insurance Law Reform Act (I forget which one), because it was on subject to average and I'd done the homework questions on that recently, and another one, but I can't remember what that was about, either.

Test #2 is next Tuesday, which will be on the basics of criminal law and on family law. I will have to do a lot more study for that one, because I don't work in the area and am not nearly as comfortable with it. Not tonight though.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Swing in Garden)
Spring has arrived with a triumph of fine weather. I have been in short-sleeves most of the week (still wearing stockings with my skirts, though) and spent most of yesterday afternoon lying in the sun in the lounge or on the deck with a book or the laptop reading. I've spent most of this afternoon in the same way. You can tell it's spring, rather than summer by the recent spate of frosts in the morning and the way the air cools late afternoon, which makes me start thinking that slippers might be a plan.

I am currently resenting the fact that I really need to do some thinking and homework. I have redone my terrible answers to the questions on the Sale of Goods Act 1908 to be handed in. I am currently putting off doing the set of questions on the Insurance Law Reform Acts 1977 and 1985 which I like even less than the Sale of Goods Act. I like the Personal Properties Securities Act 1999 even less than those three, but at least questions on it are usually able to be answered by looking at the Act.

I went to the DCM bookfair yesterday morning with the flatmates and was very restrained - I only bought 13 books and 3 CDs. Of course, five of those books were priced, and the CDs were priced, so while I was under budget, it wasn't by much. I'm rather pleased with some of the purchases - a random biography of Nancy Wake which I've never seen before (I still really want a copy of The White Mouse, Trio - a CD by Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris, of which I have Trio II already. It has already been dumped straight on the relaxation playlist for listening to before bed. Also found a copy of The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which is a book I adored when I was younger.

Got to church this morning for the first time in a month. I know this because the last time I went it was also communion and we only have communion on the first Sunday of each month. It was an interesting sermon on chapter 6 of Galatians, the final in a series on Galatians, which I managed to miss all of. Next week, apparently will be a precursor to the November series on saints and heroes, and all I currently have on next weekend is a haircut and colour, so I should manage to get to that. Church two weeks in a row - won't that be a shocker?
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Luna-tic (HP))
My brother and I have now discussed things and I now know what is expected of me in relation to my sister-in-law's birthday (a phone call, by preference and a card/gift if not or for special occasions). I still have to speak to my sister and find out if the same applies to my brother-in-law, given that I haven't exactly done anything for the last two or three years... Frankly, I think their wedding anniversary is more important, but I didn't say that to him.

Ended up coming home from work early on Monday with a nasty headache; took yesterday off for the same reason. Back at work today, but my eyes still hurt and my head generally aches. I'm eating panadol on the four hours. Given that the last time this happened, I started getting migraines and ended up needing glasses, I have made an appointment with the optomitrist on Monday.

Already tired of having sore eyes.

Bought the pattern for Dad's Christmas present (or possibly birthday present next year) today - Transportation Classics for Counted Crossstitch. I'm only going to use the good pattern of a Sopwith Camel and the only one of a Fokker Triplane. They look pretty easy and I'll probably do them on blue remaining from the Maidens of the Seasons, when they're done... that means it may be Christmas next year. Oh well.

I passed my Business terms test with 81%, which is acceptable. I lost two marks in the drafting by deliberately not putting in something because that's not how we do it at work. It's fine losing the marks in the terms tests for that, but I suppose I should do it by the book in the final exam in October, that being what really counts.

Part A of Litigation terms tests marks have been adjusted to range from 1.75 - 14 out of 20. I got 12.5, which is a pass at least. I didn't go to class last night, but I imagine my lecturer was not happy with us. I'm not happy with me for that. Hope the drafting was a lot better.

The GURPS Vorkosigan pdf is out finally and the hardback comes in October. I am currently debating whether I have enough time (and mental energy) to be in an online fortnightly or so game. Not sure about the mental energy - it looks like it would be a fun game - but I'm fairly certain the time zones and availability won't work out.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] purplesparkler, you should get [livejournal.com profile] bl9_knt to look at this.

Things that were good about today:

  • Walking into work and it not raining;
  • Finding out that insulation is going to be installed in our ceiling;
  • Eating outside in the sun;
  • Reading more about John Zizka;
  • Buying a Settlers of Catan expansion pack for my brother's birthday present;
  • Catching the 7.15pm bus home; and
  • Leftover cake

Things that were not so good about today:

  • Accidentally leaving my cellphone at home;
  • One of my lawyers having too much work as well as a sick child;
  • Stuff that had to be done now making me slightly late to my lecture;
  • My lecturer throwing a mock test; and
  • Annabelle throwing a blue-screen-of-doom hissy fit and losing all my firefox tabs. Again.

    It wasn't so much my lecturer throwing a surprise mock test that bugged me about it, it was that he was trying to get the timing into our heads and thus allowed minutes for the short answer questions and then took them off us. I'm used to doing my short answer questions and then going back to them after the drafting is complete, which, of course, I couldn't do and my marks reflected that.

    I don't think I'll walk into work tomorrow. Not because I'm tired or want to wash my hair in the morning (although both those are true), but because my books for my Wednesday class weigh a ton and I need to find my copy of the Personal Properties Securities Act and add that to the pile.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Shoe)
Exams went well enough, save for the part when they were both on the same day, which required about six hours of handwriting. The only things that really threw me were worth about two marks, so if that's the worst of it, I'm fine.

Think it's time to take more painkillers and maybe some anti-inflamatories. Wrist still aches, all the way up to the elbow. Don't want to type for too long, handwriting would be a bad idea and doing crossstitch wouldn't be particularly bright of me.

I might go make dinner so we can eat early. Apparently a lawyer from my work is on Fair Go tonight - something about "a tricky repossession story where the new owners of a house have been told the garage will have to be ripped up because there's money owing on it to a finance company. Fair Go asks who is at fault and who will pay."

I would have thought that a garage is a fixture and the proceeds of the previous sale of the property should have covered the amount owing - indeed, I would have thought that the finance company would have put a caveat on the title so they could make sure there was an undertaking in place that they would be paid before they issued consent and a transfer could occur. I certainly would have thought that the people the finance company would be going after would be the previous owners of the property.

...I guess I'll be watching it then.

EDIT: Forgot about painkillers, but a change of motion (cooking dinner) made a difference anyway. And the lawyer from work - so backed up exactly what I said and thought. It was blatantly obvious - what was tricky about it? The law is clear and the garage company should totally go after the son for damages.

Exams tomorrow. Despite my almost complete lack of study, I don't actually feel underprepared for these, although I doubt I will feel that way when sitting Estates tomorrow afternoon. Still, at least Property is in the morning and I have a couple of hours between the two, so can cram some more, if I need to. I have at least gone through and highlighted relevant legislation, something I haven't done for any other exam.

Read By Blade and Cloth by Helen E. Davis this evening (recced by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias) and quite enjoyed her take on Elves. It was a bit patchy in parts and occasionally skipped perspective very quickly, but in some scenes it was clearly deliberate. Worth US$5 for the e-book. There were three sample chapters available and then I wanted to finish it.

The wind is howling outside and it will be cold enough for me to be comfortable wearing the jacket I have worn to almost every exam since third form; my heavy denim one with big pockets and autumn tapestry inserts that I got from Orlando in September twelve years ago when I was thirteen. We got it in a large, so I wouldn't outgrow it as fast and I remember it costing US$90 - I think I paid half, although that bit is unclear. It's tradition now that I at least take it to every exam I sit.

I have both cats in my room at the moment, which is a rare thing. When I went out before, Tobias looked lonely, so I brought him in, and now he's stretched out against the wall by the door. Jemima has moved from being on my bed to sitting directly next to the heater. This is Jemima's space; Tobias wasn't allowed in here when he was a kitten so she would have somewhere that was hers. But they haven't fought - well, Jemima hissed a bit, but that's hardly uncommon - and now Tobias is taking a bath. Maybe they're tired as well.

Picked a sprig of blossom from the apple tree the other day and stuck it in a small vase. I know it's flowering, but I've never seen water go down in a vase so quickly! I have to refill the emptied vase about twice a day: morning and night

I completely failed at getting any study done on this, my first day of study leave. But then, I didn't seriously expect to get any done today. I will get some done on the other days, I swear.

It was just really nice to wake up when I was ready to and then go back to bed with a book, breakfast and a cup of coffee; to get up late, shower and dress late. I did some useful things though: cleaned the fireplace for the summer, vaccumed, made dinner. But mostly I read and relaxed and it was good.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Default)
Just watched Cyrano de Bergerac and it was excellent. It's been a very long time since a movie made me cry. The last one I remember was Little Women when Beth died - I managed to eek out a few tears for that. Or maybe that was the book...

The wind is blowing strongly outside. I love the wind, I really do, which is good since I live in Wellington, but I could do without it making my building sway enough to make me slightly queasy, especially since I no longer possess the wrist bands I used to wear to prevent car-sickness. I should take in the lemon and ginger tea we're not drinking... work would be a useful place to abandon it.

I passed my Estates test acceptably well. Have a lot of work to do before the final exams in a month. I really should have done some work on it tonight, but didn't feel like it. Oh, well. And we have a week's break next week! No making up time for an entire week. Awesome!

Students!

Things that went right today: got to work on time; DMH is back; my ipod is working; got a bit of stuff done at work; saw a cute crossstitch pattern with kittens and ate two good quality chocolates at lunch; spent most of my lunch break listening to Era; got to my test on time; the test wasn't very hard; got a bus home fairly promptly; cooked dinner and it was delicious; watched Australian cop show and laughed with the flatmates and [livejournal.com profile] clockworkflight; have been able to read and relax on the internet; my cat is sleeping on my bed; and my bed will be warm when I go to bed soon.

Things that went wrong: just missed the bus to the gym and had to catch the next one; almost everything with my work computer that you can think of; spent most of a busy morning with computer problems; some idiot girl in my test left her phone on even after being reminded to turn it off and it buzzed and she replied during the test; some other fucking student who I would like to strangle or at least break their watch had their watch set to beep every eighteen minutes or so (the length of time recommended for each question) and it would break my concentration and then stop beeping just as I was about to say something to the Lecturer and then I would be able to focus again and the entire cycle would start all over again.

Interestingly, as I wrote that, I kept coming up with more and more good things about my day. It's just the main things (the computer and that fucking watch) were really frustrating. I am going to say something to my lecturer about that watch, because I just found it so disruptive. Wish I had said something in the test now; at the time, I just didn't want to stop my train of thought.

We're out of milk, but I'm going to make coffee anyway - I don't mind drinking it with powdered milk and [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow will drink it black. Need to work out what to do for lunch, since I have class and we're out of yeast with which to make bread and it's too late to do any baking, anyhow...

Link posted for [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow - Google on Google Chrome webcomic.

Yesterday was fun: bookfair in the morning with [livejournal.com profile] clockworkflight and [livejournal.com profile] darthsappho as well as us three, and then they came up for lunch/afternoon tea/dinner to celebrate [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's birthday. There were scones with cream, but no jam because we forgot to buy any at a our last grocery shop. And then we read exerpts from books we'd bought (mostly children's short stories) and talked.

I was relatively restrained at the bookfair; I only spent $43, the least amount of the five of us. And two of those were duplicates of books I already owned, one of them accidental. I really need to remember that I don't have Freedom's Choices by Anne McCaffrey - I always get the wrong one. I'm rather pleased with the copy of The Zucchini Warriors by Gordon Korman that I picked up and Mad Maudlin by Mercedes Lackey. Am even more impressed that, apart from the biographies (Richard Burton, Napoleon and Oscar Wilde), everything is now catalogue and shelved.

Have spent (or pretended to) a reasonable amount of time today studying. Property Law and Practice test tomorrow; I wish I could take it more seriously. Called my Dad for Father's Day and forgot that he would be at Katikati already for the SOLGM conference. Talked to Mum and texted him instead.

We will not be moving in three weeks, which I'm rather relived about. Us moving in the middle of September is not a sane thing to do. In many ways, it's a shame about the house: it crossed off so many things on our list, but it lacked location, warmth and timing and in the end we weren't enthusiastic or decisive enough. We'll keep looking.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (H2G2 - Penguin)
Almost fell asleep in the more interesting of my two lectures today. Not that I was particularly tired, but that we were doing Statements of Assets and Liabilities and Distribution Statements which are part of administering an estate, and I loathe, positively loathe, doing trust account statements, which the latter essentially are. They're just so boring.

Property, on the other hand, we're onto mortgages and while that's not particularly interesting, it is something that I don't know anything about (finally!), so it's a bit easier to stay awake. The crossstitch helps, too.

Speaking of crossstitch, I have ordered the last threads I need for Winter - some hideously expensive $9 a skein of a furry white. Apparently it has mohair in it. It's for the fur border on her cloak and I need three skeins for it. Evidently, Nora Corbett has gone all out with some interesting threads on Winter: Needlepaints and this Wisper thread.

Played frisbee tonight, which was lots of fun once I warmed up. It always seems to take us the first ten minutes or so to start working as a team properly, but once we finally relax and play to our strengths, we do a lot better. We lost 13-11 to Young & Beautiful. Comrade Mojo got some marvellous D's in the zone and [livejournal.com profile] alwaysoutofink was cutting nicely through the zone. Apparently I'm to stick more to handling and short passes, sensible throws being something I'm decent at. I'll try to remember.

I kept thinking today was Wednesday, mostly because I want to be paid, I think. But I was always disappointed and it's actually tomorrow.

Been rereading Fullmetal Alchemist for the first time in ages. I'd forgotten how thoughtful it gets, particularly after it and the anime split off from each other around volume 7 or 8. I need to rewatch the anime as well.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (what are you reading)
Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] sraun while avoiding studying. This isn't America, but still seems relevant.

LITERATURE ABUSE: AMERICA'S HIDDEN PROBLEM )

Am currently working my way through For Whom The Bell Tolls and Conveyancing Law Handbook (3rd ed). By doing this meme, cooking dinner, dishes and going to read something else on the internet, I am avoiding studying. Am quite tired and headachy. I wonder if I'll actually get any study done tonight. I'm thinking about Property Law and I work within property law (there will be some conveyancing for an acquisition to do tomorrow) - does that count?
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Life is toying with me (Garfield))
I have been endeavouring to study today; took the day off work for it and everything. I didn't do nearly enough. Fortunately, I have tonight and tomorrow morning, since it's an afternoon exam. Did two loads of washing and (so far) one of dishes. Flat is not much cleaner otherwise, which I consider a success, since I find it very easy to start cleaning instead of studying.

What's been harder is having stories in my head. I watched Heroes 2.05 late last night and now the nice people in my head just won't shut up. And they're not the normal nice people either; they get plenty of story time, so aren't as fussed. No, they're old characters who want to be played with again. And what I really want to do is stitch and tell stories in my head and listen to music but I have to go look at stupid conveyancing stuff and even stupider statements. Because what law firms nowadays don't use an electronic means of generating invoices and statements?

Company that makes desired sampler for brother does not sell it in just a pdf format and has not yet got back to me about whether they can sell me the entire kit and then scan the pattern and email that to me. It's somewhat frustrating.

I should go make myself a cup of tea or coffee. Maybe I'm caffeine deprived.
nishatalitha: image: lots of ladybirds crawling up fencepost. white rope is wrapped twice around top of fencepost (Bafflement (Vorkosigan))
We did dishes tonight. Not all of them but most and all that's left is things like the dishes used to dry roast seeds and nuts and the frying pan and the tea pot. I feel surprisingly proud of this, since we last did the dishes on Saturday evening. It's amazing just how much accumulates over the space of a couple of days. And since I just made lime and ginger tea for C and myself, there are also two cups and two tea balls. But still! Dishes twice in like, two days.

I have another meeting with a PT tomorrow morning at seven. I can't remember his name because I ddin't write it down, but his name begins with G. I didn't see the results I wanted with the last lot, not in the weight loss sense. I'm much fitter and I can lift more weights, but there are more kilos that I want to loose, so I imagine I'm going to be told to go back to the cardio. It's amazing how busy the cardio area is on a Monday morning, too.

I handed in my homework (turns out I had one less section to do than I thought, which meant I got it all done) via email around 10.30pm last night. I had class today at 1pm and was handed back the first two parts, which we were going to go through in class, marked and totalled. Did surprisingly well on them, despite a losing a few marks on one through lack of actually rereading my answers. I kept thinking that it can't be right and he marked them too gently, but even after going through them it was still pretty good. I just don't feel my understanding is as great as these results suggest.
