The food show was at the Westpac Stadium this weekend and I decided that the best time to go was after church today. [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow was in Tawa for lunch and [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose had to write an assignment, so I went by myself. It was quite a different experience compared to going with someone and I missed being able to share the experience. I think it meant I moved faster—I tended to get impatient with the crowds at some of the stalls more easily and I was done in about two and a half hours.

The only thing I wish I'd gone back for was the smoked garlic carmelised balsamic vinegar. I did taste an even better caramelised balsamic vinegar, but it was about twice the price, even at food show prices.

I resisted pretty much everything we already had in the house. The only thing I didn't resist was some of the Cow Collective yoghurt, because they were doing 3 for $10 and it tastes amazing. I got the black plum (probably my favourite flavour), the mango, and plain.

In no particular order, I also bought sheep's milk parmesan; basil pesto, sun dried tomato pesto, tomato and olive pesto (3 for $10 again); 3 flavours of harvarti in one block; a very sharp cheddar for [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose; 2 packets of feta-stuffed pepperdews and one of olives in balsamic vinegar (another 3 for $10); and a bottle of scrumpy. I also took away a card for the Doctors rieslings (since they'd sold out), and a free Sunday Star Times.

And if I see Piako lemon curd frozen yoghurt in the supermarket, I want to buy some. They didn't have any containers for sale, but were doing mini-ice creams for $1. I had a cone and it was really good. I was quite disappointed that they didn't have any containers for sale. [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow will be interested to note that they also do feijoa.

[livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose made us a beef roast for dinner—I'd forgotten how good roasts are. It's been ages since we last had one. They suit the cooler weather, and after the cold snap at Easter, it just hasn't been cold enough. I don't even have flannel sheets on my bed, and I usually put them on the last couple of weeks in May! I have lit the fire tonight and the lounge is snuggly warm.

Am making progress on the meta-data. Some of them are rather annoying to find the meta data for, and I solved this by deleting the annoying ones (Buffy & Angel novelisations which I will never read) and all the Anne Rice. For some reason, a search for Anne Rice also brought up Crown of Stars by Robert Jordan...

I have had a lovely day. I forgot that my parents do a stocking if you're there Christmas Eve night. Since I'm the only one of the three of us here at the moment, there was one stocking (read: plastic supermarket bag) and that was mine. Traditional marshmellow santa (breakfast!) and chocolates, and another one of the awesome serving spoons that I wanted. Now I have two.

Mum and I spent much of yesterday preparing for the remaining Food Events (she's already had two). We had the results of some of our work today - a three course meal for lunch.

The starter was prawns marinaded in zatar, lightly cooked and drizzled with lemon juice and zest, surrounding some tiny pieces of roast kumara and shallots, with mint and basil leaves on top, overtopped with some shaved parmesan. It was meant to have spinach leaves and a red wine vinegrette over the parmesan, but we forgot to do that. It still tasted excellent, although we felt the prawns needed a bit more flavour.

The main course consisted of a green salad with a vaguely mediterranean flavour (mostly aided by the red onion and feta); more of the cubed roast kumara; fresh asparagus drizzled with a wasabi vinegrette and reduced balsamic vinegar; and the piece de resistance: a side of salmon sliced with half lemon pieces inserted into the slits, oven baked with a moroccan glaze that included, amongst other things, cumin, chilli, coriander, lemon juice, lemon zest, brown sugar, olive oil. It was amazing.

Dessert was the lemon curd & gingernut souffle that I've made a few times before. Mum makes the tiramisu from the same page, I make the souffle. It was excellent, as expected.

After, we headed over to the 'tron to see my sister, her husband, and tiny baby nephew, who has now regained all the weight he lost after he was born (11%). He is suitably cute and adorable. He's either sleeping, eating, or pooping most of the time, I gather, but he managed to wake up for an hour or so when we were there. He likes stretching and is very uncoordinated. Yay, baby nephew! The parents are doing well, too. It still seems unreal - my little sister has a baby, but it's true. She does. And he's real. :D I have photos to inflict on some people at some point.

I should probably head towards bed now - tomorrow we have a family Christmas on my Mum's side. First we collect my brother and his wife from the airport around 11.40am and to do that, we should leave around 10.30am. Lunch is bring your own, but dinner is the big pot-luck. Most of the food prep for this is all done; we just need to assemble it there. There will probably be 24 for dinner.

Yuletide reading for me will be limited until I get home - I haven't found an unsecured network for my laptop yet, and don't really want to read lots sitting up in the office (apparently I've used the same working for the location and music here before...).

Wellington has been gorgeous today. Hot and still - we opened all the windows and doors and only closed them around 8.00pm tonight. I walked down and back to my haircut and colour. I've got a couple of very white patches now; I think it looks quite cool, but the white at the corner of my eye is quite startling. Also, apparently you can get temporary dyes, so I can put in a rinse in a random colour and have it wash out the next day.

This weekend is turning into a foodie weekend. Unlike [livejournal.com profile] exiledinpn, I'm too lazy to get up early enough to go to a market and buy lots of tomatoes to make my own sun(oven)dried tomatoes or panzella. I wish I was sometimes, but it's just so much effort. Maybe if I wasn't dependent on public transport...

We had [livejournal.com profile] purplesparkler stay with us last night. Dinner was easy: we bought a chicken at the supermarket, a couple of pestos, a couple of cheeses, and some bread ([livejournal.com profile] tamarillow's breadmaker died and although the new one arrived this morning, we did not have fresh bread to use), and the foodie part of that was experiementing with creamy cocktails. It also means we now have cherry mariner in the house. I'm not entirely convinced that I like it, but I'd like to find something to do with it.

A few bottles were finished (including the bourbon, which none of us like) and the shelf seems to be getting low, as we now need to buy replacement bottles of gin, brandy, contreau, and frangelico. We're not lushes, honest.

Tonight was the first barbeque of the evening. I burninated my favourite fish fritter recipe and was really pleased with how they turned out - when I next make them inside, I might have to try using the cast-iron frying pan instead of the big heavy aluminum one. Also burninated shrimp marinated in a oyster sauce, ginger and sesame oil mixture. We complimented this with fresh peas and a garden salad and a bottle of moscato d'asti.

Dessert will be pavlova. It's the first one I've made, and I have a feeling that I've overcooked it some. It's the Edmonds receipe (I decided I didn't want to try the Stephanie's Cook's Companion one yet), and I had to use standard sugar instead of caster sugar. We'll see how it turns out. This goes with strawberries and cream. Mmmmm.

The egg yolks have been saved and I think I will mostly use them to make sweet-short pastry. It's almost time to start making Christmas mince-meat tarts. The other thing I need to make tomorrow is chicken stock. We have two carcasses in the freezer and another in the fridge and these should be used up.
