Demonstrations
Nov. 6th, 2003 01:00 pmRight now, I'm on Black Knight's computer, giving a running demonstration on how to update an lj. He's not very enthusiastic, and I don't think he'll be posting very often. Doesn't think that people will find his entries interesting. I have my doubts about the accuracy of that opinion, but I rather think that people will be correcting grammer as often as not, since we do have a spell-check option available to us.
Yesterday and last night were fun. I met Paul around lunchtime, and we spent the day together before going out to Petone Beach (having gotten some really good fish & chips first) to meet the others. We collected firewood, and found a good spot on the beach to make a fire. Unfortunately, the cops were coming around telling people to put there fires out, that there was a fire ban on for tonight (last night) only. So, obediently, we put out our nice fire - it lit really well, thanks to the grease on the fish & chip papers - and stood around and fumed.
I got really annoyed, and when I saw some police up on the footpath talking, eventually decided to go ask them why, since there hadn't been any advertising about it. Black Knight and I overheard them telling another group of people that there wasn't actually a fire ban, it was just that all fires had to be built below the high tide mark. I think we were technically below the high tide mark, but we moved down well below it, and relit our fire, Gareth grumbling all the time because he had to relight it.
People were already lighting fireworks, even though it wasn't quite dark yet. When they started talking about needing large, heavy pieces of wood for the fire, I remembered a log I'd seen earlier. We went and dug it up (dodging fireworks on the way) and settled in to watch fireworks and set off our own.
This was much fun. We could see the Wellington City Council ones in the distance when they were set off, and they were very pretty. It was only marred by the people behind us having absolutely no sense of safety and consideration and setting off their fireworks right behind us. A couple of people were hit by flying cinders, and Jessikast's jacket was melted slightly. The danger of what they were doing was impressed on them, and they were very apologetic.
We toasted marshmallows when the fire went down, and it was all very nice and pretty and stuff. My eyes ended up hurting a little because of the random flashes of light.
