It turns out that the AA on behalf of NZTA are not allowed to accept a certified copy of a birth certificate as proof of identity for renewing a driver's licence - it has to be the original. Or, you can present the driver's licence you are renewing as proof. I now have a piece of paper in my wallet as a temporary licence.

I am slightly disturbed that I, who has not driven for about ten years, can still legally drive.
