We were told on Wednesday last week that we had a week of rain coming up. Thursday was fine. Friday it rained. Today was fine (until we got out of the Star Trek movie and found it had started raining again). Tomorrow will probably rain.

Had church type people around for lunch today. We were planning to go walking in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary (or maybe the Wilton bush or possibly even Tinakori Hill out the back of our place), but set this aside in favour of sitting in our lounge and talking.

The movie was lots of fun. There were thing I liked and disliked.

I should note that I know the original series; not well, perhaps, but enough.

Spock/Uruha
Where did they get that from? I gathered that she was either directly under his command in their research group or at the very least, he is a serving officer and she's still a cadet. That's dodgy there. But it wasn't that so much that made me uncomfortable as the PDAs. Here you have a very private individual from a culture that doesn't encourage open affection, a culture where just touching is acceptable public behaviour, and they're kissing! That scene in the lift - if she'd just touched his face, I would have thought that was incredibly sweet and amazing, but instead it was totally overboard.

I think Uruha and Sulu would be really interesting as a couple.

But then, I totally ship Kirk/Spock and have for years.

Scotty
Awesome. Enough said.

Spock
Awesome. Both of them. Casting choice was excellent. I appreciated that Old!Spock had a sense of humour, that it did sort of feel like someone meeting up with a younger version of his friend who has been dead for years. Not sure what they'll do with two of them, though...

Vulcan
They blew up a major planet in the Federation and turned it into a black hole. That was... interesting. In the Chinese curse sense of the word.

Costuming
All the girls in uniform wore mini-skirts. I hated that.

Ranks
Like any sensible military acadmey would promote a cadet straight to captain, let alone captain of the flagship, even if he had successfully got a ship through a major wartime engagement, because captaining a ship day in and day out involves a lot of careful people management and those are skills he should have some practice at first.

Yes, I'm totally judging.

All in all, the movie was crack, lots of fun and I would probably see it again (from somewhere in the theatre other than the first few rows back).
