I've been reading a mixture of LOTR and God Omens fic. No crossovers, alas... or actually. I don't think I really want to know what Crowley and Aziraphale would do to the good citizens of Minas Tirth or Rivendell or wherever the author happened to place them. Although what they would do to the entire religious structure of Middle Earth would be interesting. The Elves wouldn't know what hit them in the face.
Good Omens is a good book, and there's not nearly enough slash around based on it. Until tonight, when maudlinrose gave me a link to a Dogma/Good Omens crossover, I only knew of two fics. One of them is by Khirsah and Ailei, and those of you whom have read any of their work can probably imagine how good it is. Unfortunately, the link I have to it (and to any of their home pages) isn't working. I think I need to reread Good Omens.
Stuff about books I've been reading lately.
I've been reading a lot lately. I do this every so often, and it's been books, not fanfic, hence the whole not being online very often. Gone through a Star Wars trilogy that was offered me, and I don't think that people want to know the list of everything that I've read in the past couple of weeks, but I think I'll put it down anyways. Or at least indicate the highlights. Most of it has been rereading old favourites, or just rereading because a line got stuck in my head and I wanted to see the scene again. I've been listening to a lot of Jewel lately for much the same reason.
I'm not sure if the Honor Harrington series by David Weber quite falls into the category listed, but I'll assume it does. I've read all those, the aforementioned Star Wars trilogy about Thrawn, a number of short story fantasy anthologies, of which I own three and got one from the library, and have read The Black Swan and it's sequal which is in Flights of Fantasy (another fantasy anthology) as well as the sequal; Golden Fool by Robin Hobb - the second in the Tawny Man series, which in itself is a sequal series to the Farseer Trilogy and in the same universe as the Liveship Traders trilogy. There are some crossover characters and the Fool/Amber/Lord Golden is proving to be remarkably interesting. And I've started going through all my Mercedes Lackey books. I've only read three of them so far, but I don't want to start on Vanyel until I get Magic's Promise back from manic_subbie.
I got Cavalcade out from the library today. It's by Alison Sinclair, and it's rather good. Interesting premise, and I don't think that I've seen it anywhere else. At least, not taken to the extent that it is. I'll try and avoid spoilers (so will stop talking about it) and will finish by saying that I imagine that if I was in the story, I'd've probably been within ten metres of water on the appointed date, and would have gone on the ship. Yes, it's that one, and if people want to borrow it before I have to return it to the Karori library, they're most welcome.
maudlinrose, do you remember a book called The Merro Tree? By Katie Waitman. I've been wanting to reread it recently, and not having a copy, I've looked in the library for one. They don't have a copy alas, but they have another book of hers called The Divided. I've started it, but it doesn't seem as good as The Merro Tree, and it's not set in the same world.
I am steadily resisting the temptation to get out any Anne McCaffrey books from the library. I want to reread the Ship Who Sang series, and I find that I'm somewhat indignant about having to get them out of the library when I actually own all of them. They're just not down here, that's all. I'm missing more than just the ship books, though. I think I want all the non-Pern books down here that she's written, which would include Restoree, all the Ship books (and Get Off the Unicorn) - about 8 books, and the Doona ones. So that's about 12 books more I want down here. Oh, and possibly the Planet Pirate series, which including the Dinosaur Planet books, would be another 5. So, 17 books in all. I don't think I own any of the Freedom series(Botany Planet), or the Crystal Singer ones or what's the other one... Petaybee, the Powers That Be series. I know I have a couple of that list, but I don't know what ones, and I don't want them down here that much.
I'm considering entering the mopfic challenge. I'm not sure who's going to judge it, or whether I can write badly enough. I don't like writing badly that much. For me, it feels like a waste, like it's not going to be of any use when I go to write something that is important to me. I'm not trying to put down writing badly - when done well, it's quite funny - it's just that I don't feel it's something I do well, and it's not really how I want to write. But then, I always have had a preference for long and complicated.
I've started another fic. Saved title is CourtPolitics! and it'll probably fit somewhere in the universe that Jessikast and I talked about on the train up to Auckland for the convention. I still haven't managed to mention the complicated way of finding out rank, kin, and other assorted information by the way that a string of leather or ribbon is tied around one's arm. I am going to give away the plot of everything I've written in it right now, so if you want to wait and read the story, skip over the next bit and come back when I'm writing about something else.
About all I know of what I've written so far is that Lady Jayden slept with a noble in order to gain his signature on something that's exceedingly important (judging by the spells protecting that bit of parchment) but I don't know what that is. She returns to the party and eventually goes home to find that Lady Valencia is awaiting her in her private sitting room. And that's about as much as I have written. Three pages or so. I imagine that it will be femmslash. Okay, I know it will be. Anything regarding the plot, I wouldn't have a clue about. I do know that it'll be a short story, and should fit into the larger universe/novel that I might write one day.
Hmmm. Have I anything else to babble about. Sabbac is fun. It is a game with no rules, apparently.
I am glad that I've about stopped PMS-ing. Doing that annoys me, and the pain isn't any fun either. I managed to avoid taking any painkillers beside the anti-inflammatories that I'm supposed to be taking. I'm kinda pleased with that. Yes, I know it's stupid to not take painkillers when you're in pain, but for some reason I felt rather violently opposed to the idea of taking any. It was helped by the fact that the only time that I was tempted to give in, I couldn't find the panadol. And my hot water bottle hasn't gotten that much use, either. Cuddling is good, if not particularly effective. Going out in company, where one has to assume the mask of being pain-free, even if one is not, can be effective, but doesn't really stop the pain. At least it isn't the full moon.
I should go to bed. I probably won't, because I'm like that, and I'm awake at the moment, but I should go. I might go and see if I can find any more Good Omens fic because I like it.
Did you all see the snow on the other side of the harbour? Other side to me, Jessikast, not you. It was most pretty, and there was a fair amount of it. It'll probably all be gone by the end of tomorrow, but it's lasted a few days, which is nice. I took a couple of photos because I could. It was down way below 200m. I finally got around to putting masking tape over all the cracks in my window frames. Room is much warmer now, and not as loud when it's really windy. I figure I'll just take the tape off come summer, when I actually want to open the windows. I left tape off the two windows that I actually open. I did the lounge too, and the same goes for there. I didn't do all of the lounge, since some of the wood that I was trying to attach tape to was too wet to stick, so I'll have to do that another time. But it's working well enough. People can take it off themselves if they want to open a window, and frankly, if paint peels off when they take it off, no one is going to notice.
