M-preg in Ancient Chinese Novel!
Aug. 8th, 2007 08:22 pmI'm getting paranoid about anemia again. I can't remember the last time I didn't feel tired or run out of energy early in the evening - I was yawning by 7pm tonight. It probably just is paranoia, tiredness after working on the larp for so long and then Confusion 5 last weekend and all I actually need is a weekend to sleep and do nothing. Nevertheless, the next time I need a blood test (probably within the month), I think I'll ask if my iron levels could be checked at the same time.
Found Covenants by Lorna Freeman second hand in Arty Bees today. It's one of the books on my buy if I see list, particularly if it's second hand. Now I just need the second one and the third, when it comes out in November/December. It makes me happy.
Something that is currently making me highly amused is The Journey West, the fifteenth century Chinese quest novel that I'm reading in translation. Chapter 54 moves from the realm of the fantastical and unbelievable to that of the absurb and impossible. There's a country that is the Nation of Women, so they get pregnant by drinking out of the Child-and-Mother River.
Then, of course, Tripitaka (the priest) and Pa-chieh drink some of the water and get pregnant. And they're both men, so there is assorted angst about how is the baby going to come out and spiritual purity. That sort of thing. So Pilgrim (the Monkey King) volunteers to go beat up the Taoist who is charging for use of the Abortion Stream and Child Destruction Cave. So after a couple of battles, Sha Monk steals the water while Pilgrim distracts the Taoist, they get the water and can set off on their journey again.
I kid you not, it's all there in black & white on the pages in front of me. If I read this as fic, I'd consider it crack and badly done crack at that. But this! I'm starting to wonder what else I'm going to come across as I read this.
