Yesterday morning I saw a morepork on my way to catch the bus so I could go to the gym before work. I could have reached out and touched it if I wanted a bleeding hand. After a bit, I said "Hello." and a bit after that, it silently flew away. It didn't seem afraid of me at all. That was rather cool.

I have recently obtained a game called American McGee's Alice and it's just my sort of creepy. It's based off Alice in Wonderland, which I reread recently to see if I liked it now because I didn't when I was a kid (I don't). The game, on the other hand, is lots of fun. Challenging, because it's been a very long time since I played any game that requires both hands and use of the mouse and the keyboard at the same time. There are coordination issues. It's rather macabre, but I like it.

Also on the Wonderland theme, I recently found a fic I've been after for a couple of years in which Giles ends up in Looking Glass Land. It's not as macabre as the game, but it's certainly more lethal than Through the Looking Glass. And there are cats. The formatting is a pain, but it's All Mimsy Were The Borogoves should you wish to read it.

Huh, that's weird, that's the second time I've heard about that game this week.

I heard about it earlier because apparently they're going to release a sequel. The buzz I heard sounds good.

I'm keen to play Alice, actually. Where did you get it?

I actually downloaded it - did a basic google search for the game download. You can even get it legally.

What are they calling the sequel?

... Now I have As I Was Crossing Boston Common stuck in my head, as intermittently happens. (The second creature in line is a boobook.)

I've never read this. I should see if the library has a copy...

It is incredibly cute! And a good way to get children (and adults!) interested in strange animals.

As I was crossing Boston Common
Not very fast, not very slow
I met a man with a creature in tow
And the creature's name was angwantibo...

I can't remember beyond coypu, which it turns out is the same thing as a nutria, an invasive beaver-like pest around these parts. ;)

I remember playing Alice when it came out almost 10 years ago! Long time eh?

I remember it being very pretty; but I suppose the intervening advances in graphics probably render it "okay" now. Certainly Starcraft is looking pretty blah and it was similarly pretty and similarly old...

I wasn't going to make you feel old... I probably would have enjoyed it then if I had gotten as far as realising it existed...

It's not up to the detail of, say, Heroes of Might and Magic V or Spore, but it's certainly pretty and detailed enough.

I rather like it because it's odd. I much prefer this version of Alice than the one in the books...

Am I allowed to be jealous of your morepork? I got to hear one last weekend, but I doubt I'll manage to see one before I head home.

If you like, but it's the first one I've ever seen outside of a zoo and they're not uncommon here.

Your trip is going well, I take it.

My trip went really well for the most part. I did get to see a whole bunch of barn owls one night, but no boobook/morepork.
