Home again, home again, jiggidy jig
Jan. 2nd, 2006 12:13 amI have spent most of my time on the computer for the last day and a half catching up on livejournal entries. I always forget how regularly the communities I belong to post. Friends are the least of it. Still, done now (think it ended up being about 180 entries in the end), am caught up on my inbox, and I have music playing again while I sit at the computer, which makes me happy. Haven't put any of my clothes away yet - the current version of unpacking involved emptying my bag out on my bed, do laundry (which I still need to hang out - ooops!), and going grocery shopping. I have made no further progress since then.
Matarangi was lovely. My parents new house there worked well. I spent the majority of the first day reading Olympus by Dan Simmons, much to my parents disgust, but I did go to the beach, and go swimmming, and yes, I got burnt. I always get burnt once every summer, and then I remember that I really do need to use sunscreen after all. You'd think I'd learn after all this time, but no. In the evening of that first day, my sister and her boyfriend turned up, my brother's girlfriend, my brother, and two of my brother's flatmates. There were 12 of us for nearly three days.
But dishwasher! Washing machine! House! There were three people in tents, but the rest of us got to be in the house. My sister and I shared a bed that first night, and then she gave up (it was too hot) and slept on the couch in the lounge. I did a lot of crossstitch, a lot of reading, and went swimming every day for about an hour around 3pm, when I was slightly less likely to get burned.
There was a sandcastle competition on my last day there, so I checked out the results. There were a couple of mermaids, a couple of dragons, lots of boats, a game of nine pins, a clever horse, a very clever stingray (they got the curve to the tips of its wings), and a cartoon. I wish I'd had my phone with me, so I could've taken a photo, but I'll endeavour to describe it. To one side was a vaccuum cleaner, with its hose and nozzle extending to the centre of the picture. Being sucked into the nozzle were the torsos and legs of three figures, labelled 'Judy', 'Paul' and 'Susan'. It was captioned 'TV 1 Clean Up'. I hope it won, since it was beautifully done, and very clever.
Went to a couple of parties last night. All roleplayers, but different groups. I didn't end up hearing as much about Shadowrun as I expected, and heard more about martial arts stories than I did expect, but it was lots of fun. And then I worked today, on a reasonable amount of sleep - about six hours. Work today was odd. Pania and I felt kinda lazy and relaxed, so we didn't hurry, but the rooms were messy, and we finished about 5pm.
I still have to go over my Earthdawn character again, to check that I have the details I want in there. It should be good, although I'm wondering if I should've written Ilsa or Eva the Illusionist, and chosen between the two. Although, oooh, I did inflict Petals around the Rose on assorted relatives over Christmas. It took my brother two throws to get it, which surprised me. Everyone else took much longer, and I'm not sure Mum ever did get it. My brother did, however, give me 11 dice for Christmas. Individually wrapped. In waterballoons.

lmbujold recently. It's not a Yuletide story, which is totally cool, because it's very good, and it's long, and the worst part about it is that there are 18 chapters, one being posted every day, and only three are up! Miles/Gregor, 720 kb (complete, I assume). Set just after Memory, it includes the basic premise that Laisa never turned up. Not sure about Duv. Just so you know, because the link I have doesn't give that warning. It threw me for a bit, but I'm enjoying, and am rather looking forward to the next chapter.

I have to update my catalogue, since I loaned four books to my sister, had two returned to me by my brother, and got the three Charles de Lint I mentioned earlier from Santa. And a trowel! This will make it easier to pull up weeds.
