I have volunteered to take over the organisation of Confusion this year. Confusion is traditionally the first Saturday in August, but as there are several cons on in August/September (Confusion/Au Contraire/Chimera/Aussiecon 4), I think more than two weeks between Confusion and Chimera and Au Contraire (which are on the same weekend) would be a good idea.

Chimera and Au Contraire are both on the weekend of 27/29 July. Worldcon is 2-6 September.

There is a poll on NZRag for those who want to fill it out there.

For those of you who are not members, but are interested in going to a day of roleplaying/board games in Wellington, there is a poll here:

[Poll #1539586]

  • wash sheets
  • wash towels
  • general load of darks
  • dry all of the above
  • attach new dryer vent to dryer
  • was duvet cover
  • clean bathroom
  • vacuum
  • lots of study

It looks like more progress than it actually is. The dryer is now set up, so my sheets are in there now. I went to hang out the third load and discovered it was spitting with rain. Given that the air felt damp anyway, I was dubious about things drying, so brought it all in. Some is drying in the sunroom; the towels are waiting for the dryer to be done.

The silver dryer vent hanging out the window looks rather silly, but is doing its job - which is all one can really ask.

It's time for lunch. The aim is to have my books open in the lounge and start studying by 3.00pm...

I really wish my Tuesday night lecturer would remember that the reason we skip the ten minute break is so we finish ten minutes earlier, which coincidentally means that I will probably make the 7.15pm bus home. If I don't, I'll have to either catch the 7.53 Wilton, which means a twenty minute walk (something I do not want to be doing in July or August) or wait around in town for an hour and get home around 9.00pm, which is too late on a Tuesday night.

I've bowed out of playing frisbee for the year, or at least until October and after my exams. I'm willing to sub in the school breaks, assuming time, health and lifts, but that is not much compartively.

On the other hand, it means I now have my Saturdays free, what with practice having shifted to Sunday morning and me having church. As our flatwarming was the last thing booked, having my Saturdays free is still a novelty.

Nonetheless, they seem to be filling up. Slowly at the moment, but study will take over spare time and then there will be other events. Currently coming up:

1. Visiting Alessan this coming Saturday;
2. Possibly The Last Great Snail Chase movie screening at the NZ Film Archive next Friday or Saturday (currently undecided);
3. I think I have something on on the 5th, but don't know what;
4. Easter: dinner party ([livejournal.com profile] darthsappho, [livejournal.com profile] clockworkflight, [livejournal.com profile] deepbluemermaid and flatmates, we need to get on and organise this);
5. My parents, brother and sister-in-law are visiting the weekend after Easter and we will hopefully get to the Monet exhibition. I have agreed to meet my brother and his wife at the airport and they get in at 9.25am;
6. May 10 - after church the cellgroup is going for a tramp in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and we will see how far we get before it gets dark/we have to turn back to make it out before dark. We aim to get past the second dam at the very least.

The last is weather dependent.

The cellgroup met up at Expressoholic (which is not closing, I told, but moving to where Dorothy's was) and spent a few hours talking about things which ranged from mocking Arise services to Lovecraftian mythos, conservation, food, books, computer games and so on. I have to say that it is very nice that [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow and I are no longer the geeky ones in the group. We are not alone. There are tentative plans for dessert at Strawberry Faire in April, but I baggsed not organising that one.

Occasionally, over the past few years, I've wished in the vaguest of ways that I was more heavily involved in fandom. However, I've had that desire completely knocked out of me, and I am quite happy that the only fandom I am involved in as fandom is Lois McMaster Bujold, and that primarily in the form of a mailing list. I have never been so glad as I am now that I was only ever involved in fandom for the fic and the slash. And it's all because of this. I only caught the very beginning; the first Cassandra Claire plargarism debacle and the move to Fiction Alley and Schnoogle. I had no idea all this was going on, and it's scarily fascinating and disturbing.

I had the delightful experience yesterday of finding that my workmate F. not only knows but likes Era, the group I keep mentioning here, with each comment on them falling into the black hole of the internet. I've invited her over for dinner on Saturday, and since she mentioned liking Emma Shapplin, whom I am also rather fond of as an artist, amd Sarah Brightman (I like her in Phantom of the Opera), I thought she might appreciate some music videos I have of them. I said: "Era." She said: "Ameno?"*

Have been cleaning, both in preparation for F's visit, and to make it easier to tidy when my parents are down in three weeks. If I sweep the ceilings and dust thoroughly now, there'll be less to do then.

Must go start dinner soon, or at least finish defrosting the meat, since [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose and I are going to Serenity tonight. The tickets are sitting on my desk. I also need to rescue my necklaces from behind my dressing table, since the nifty display I just made fell down. Something stronger than bluetac should work... EDIT: Ended up using a strip of gold satin I had lying around and drawing pins. It's not stretchy, so the effect is much the same. And then I did the same for my solid bracelets on a different piece of fabric.

*One of their tracks for which I have the music video.

In other news, we got the results of the assessment this morning.

* * * * +

The exec is really pleased with how well we did, and that there was only one small thing that Housekeeping deals with that needed doing. Some small things from around the hotel (needing more plants in the drive way, for example) were also picked up on. If they're fixed, and we have a smaller reassessment this year, we get five, or we wait until next year for the next reassessmnet.

Unsurprisingly, on the heels on a few stressful days came another stressful day, as the forty rooms that we thought we wouldn't have to do were unexpectedly occupied when a plane was diverted to Wellington, and the passengers had to spend the night at the Bolton. So, eighteen rooms today, most of them checkouts, and I finished shortly after five.

However, everyone stopped at midday to get together for lunch and for a few speeches from Kathy (the General Manager), Zlarta, and Warrick (the owner), mostly saying thank you, and what a wonderful job we had all done, that we're wonderful, and as a team, Housekeeping impressed the inspectors, because we were polite, cheerful, and they sensed we were enthusiastic about working there. Also, there were presentations, rewards for the best bathroom, the best bedroom, and for the supervisor for the best rooom in general.

And much to my shock (especially since I hardly remember doing the room), a bathroom I'd done in 906 was the best bathroom! So I was presented with a bottle of wine, which I'll probably open at my birthday, because that sounds like a good use for it. So that was a nice surprise.

I am also, or rather my parents are being, tremendously organised about Christmas. Dad booked a flight up for me last night, and even volunteered to pay for it, so I travel up on the evening of the 22nd, and I've asked off from the 23rd - 31st inclusive. Christmas, family, and depending on what happens and my organisational skills, maybe go and visit [livejournal.com profile] thesane.

EDIT: Also, if anyone knows where I can find a particular Smallville fic involving Clark, Lex, and a corset, I would really appreciate a link being thrown my way. I read the fic a couple of weeks ago, want to reread it, and I've been hunting for it for nearly a week now without success.

LATER: Obviously, writing about my desperation was the key to finding it. I have found it, will read it, and know exactly where to get it from next time. I imagine I'll also get around to linking it in [livejournal.com profile] thezangre. I'm glad I spent the time hunting for it tonight, especially with the end success. I'm so going to regret this in the morning, though.
