Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] tamarillow!

I am skiving out on the morning panels - the first one I really want to go to is at 2.00pm and most of the rest are tomorrow. As this is the fourth day of the con I am reaching people saturation point and generally tired. This is despite having nearly eight hours sleep a night. My current plan for the morning to is to have a short wander around some shops and then go back to my hotel and finish reading the new Pratchett. Maybe even nap.

Am eating breakfast in McDonalds (50mg cap, but no time limit) and am chatting to [livejournal.com profile] thesane and generally catching up on the news. I have about 11mg left to my cap and have been here for an hour. This is much more comfortable than sitting in the train station for half an hour!

I have been particularly impressed with New Zealand's civil defence force and how it is all being handled. I understand that power is on in 90% of Christchurch now and water is nearing the same point. Now, if only the next earthquake can hold off until we've had time to repair the damage and strengthen everything.

I had a vaguely witty post planned that encompassed the sheer 80sness of my hotel room (which is up a flight of stairs and down a flight of stairs and through a courtyard), with pictures, even. However, I'm on the ANZ free wireless at the Southern Cross railway station, which is half a block from my hotel and that gives me 50mg over 30 minutes twice a day.

I will have to right it up in more detail later, but a few noteworthy items:

  • Heat! People kept saying Melbourne weather is like Wellington, which is true - except for the bit where it's a few degrees warmer
  • Completely tiled bathroom
  • NZ 2020 Natcon bid being taken relatively seriously
  • Shopping
  • Eating kangaroo (it was okay)
  • China Mieville reading and signing
  • Signing up to be in a Girl Genius radio play tomorrow

And for the concom of Au Contraire:

  • Consistently being told by people that Au Contraire was excellent; and
  • Jacqui Smith peering at me and saying "You look familiar. Where do I know you from?"

Re. the last, I volunteered to keep the unwanted people out of the kids programme "build your own lightsaber" and she and her son were there.
